New laws against police misconduct will never help,
with qualified immunity from the very laws they swore an oath to uphold.
Until the weaponized government law enforcement officers pay for their malpractice insurance individually nothing happens ever. If they pay their own malpractice premiums they will price themselves out of the profession with malpractice before the review boards, arbitrators, unions, chiefs, DA’s, and judges can cover for them.

I think Mr. Spooner based much of his argument on the "general principles of law and reason" without really defining them.

Ultimately, all living things are forced to survive in a world with other living things. All of those living things have both shared and competing goals with other living things. That's the context in which governments are created. Those governments are sustained to the degree to which they satisfy the majority of the people who might otherwise overthrow them. Fortunately for us, most humans share common goals of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. It's our commonality that allows us to rely so heavily on the "golden rule" for most of our civilized behavior.

I think "governments" arise naturally in many situations. Look at bees and you'll find aspects of "government". Look at a pack of wolves and you'll find aspects of government. Look at the human immune system and you'll find aspects of government. Look at the regulation of our organs and muscles by the "government" of our brains. "Who put those brain cells in charge of us muscle cells?"

The reality is that our government was created by those who came before us and it was passed on to us along with the invention of the wheel, the discovery of fire, and a really great interstate highway system. Our government, like so much of our cultural inheritance, is a gift. It will serve us well if we maintain it properly, but it will burn us badly if we don't.

Bill, I salute you for your vigilance in keeping an eye on what our government is doing. The price of liberty is eternal vigilance, and you've been making regular payments as long as I've known you. Thanks very much.
