What's 42?

Besides the answer to life, the universe and everything :?: :?: :D

It's the number of years since the first gathering of hang gliding enthusiasts who flew in Newport Beach in May of 1971 :!: :!: :!: .

Let's get together and keep Otto's spirit going by celebrating properly with other pilots who appreciate the awesome feeling that day left us with :!: :!: :!:

42? duh, don't you mean 43...

Okay, senior moment here. :o

I realized after doing the math and looking at the calendar, that it's 2014 and it's been 43 years since hang gliders celebrated the birth of Otto Lilienthal - who, as most pilots know (or should know) made a major contribution to the field manned of aviation.

In 1971, a group of crazy guys - who thought plastic and bamboo would keep them in the air - came together in Newport Beach and "flew" - bringing us the first gathering of hang gliders.

In 2011, a plaque was placed in the park near where it's believe the gathering occurred.

It's important to keep the spirit of this event alive.

I second that conclusion Margie!!

By the way, I have to agree that it doesn't seem like it's been 3 years already since the 40th anniversary of the original 1971 event. Where does the time go?

So who's up for the 43rd anniversary of that great event?
