A Thank You note

Postby Dayhead » Mon Jun 01, 2015 8:19 pm

It is my desire to offer a heartfelt Thank You to Bob K, Joe F, Joe Greblo, Dan Fitzpatrick, Frank Colver, and many others for "making my day" on Otto's BirdDay.

It was an honor to be there. And Frank Colver let me (try) to fly his Standard! I felt like a part of history.

I got to fly the Aolus (was it Dan's?), something that I wanted to do back in it's heyday but didn't get the chance. Flew it the first time and decided it was too nose heavy for dune flying so I moved the strap and it then trimmed at or near min sink.

I missed out on the Antares, but maybe next time Joe?

The little 140 Seagull was fun and flew surprisingly well.

I actually could maintain altitude, but for only one pass, on my 188 Skyhawk several times.

Anyway, thanks to those that let me fly their kites. You helped to Make My Day.

It was great to meet so many good people, all sharing in the Joy of Flight for the simple pleasure of it.

Your Hang Gliding buddy, Steve Corbin.

That's a wonderful comment Steve. Thanks very much.

Do you mind if we move it to the Otto meet topic so it will "live" with all the other comments on that event? As time goes on, topics in a forum tend to get shuffled around and it would be nice to keep them all together.

Also, thanks to you for your participation in the US Hawks. The Otto meet is just one of many things that we're working to accomplish for the sport of hang gliding. Every active member helps us work toward that goal, and I appreciate your willingness to participate here!!

Your hang gliding buddy, Bob Kuczewski.

P.S. Joe Faust is working on attaching names to the many photos that we have from the Otto event. Do you think this might be you?

Yep, that's me!

Putting it in the Otto meet is a good idea, why didn't I think of that?

Who # 18 & 19: John Rittenhouse on left, John Halcrow on right. They were in high school with my son Matt and lived in our neighborhood. John Rittenhouse was at the first Otto meet, not sure about Halcrow. They have always been even closer friends with Ernest Feher. Both John Rittenhouse and I fly R/C electrics at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa. All three, Rittenhouse, Halcrow, & Feher got word of the 44th anniversary meet from my e-mailing.

The other photo in Joe's post further down titled "Ernest Feher" is actually another photo of John Halcrow.

Ernest Feher was co-builder of the Bamboo Bomber with my son Matt and flew at the first Otto meet in '71. See photo. Matt is pilot and Ernest is pushing (only way it could get off that shallow hill). Notice also two ropes being hand towed.

If someone identifies Ernest Feher in the various photos of the May 23, 2015, Otto Party, please post such or tell me the file name. Thanks.
I deleted the misidentified photo. Thanks, Frank.

Frank has Who019 as John Halcrow. Frank also noted that Who020 might be another image of John Halcrow. However, maybe we can review this again here:

Different clothing. Different cap. More game to do here. Second thoughts, Frank? Ernest, what say you? John Halcrow, what say you? Anyone?

On second look who020 doesn't look like another of John H but it doesn't look like Ernest either. I have photos of Ernest flying the Condor but they don't show his face well. I'll sift through my other photos of the day.

BTW - Do you have John Anderson in your list of attendees? He was another friend whom I notified and he was there in the morning. He wasn't at the Otto #1 but he was flying a "standard" in the 70's. He is also now one of my electric R/C flying buddies.

Yes. He filled out a waiver to fly. I've got that list which I haven't gone through yet. I'd like to contact those people and invite them to join the new Dockweiler club, but I've been waiting for us to finalize the name and establish the officers.
