Here is a film on YouTube of Reinhard Platz 1923 sailwing glider:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LVtc8l3Z5o

It shows that flexwings with self generating aerofoils were flying long before Rogallo developed his. No manned flights are show but there are a few photos of it in manned flight.

There were photos of it available in the 70's so it is possible someone reverse engineered it. It's a relatively simple design with just a keel, wing spar, A frame , king post and a fair few cables. The jib & mainsail could have been made on a home sewing machine.

Did you see it fly and what year would it have been ?

Tony

Yes, I saw it fly on the south side of the POM. It was able to park in what I considered fairly light lift for standard Rogallos. I did just what Frank said he wouldn't do with the Port-a-Wing. I walked up the hill to get a closer look - just below and off to the side. I'd never seen anything like it before. I think it was '75. I didn't recognize the pilot and unfortunately had to leave before meeting him. I moved away from the area soon after and don't know if the pilot was just visiting or became a regular.

That's interesting Brian and it would great to find out more. It is a long time ago but if there is a local club at Point of the Mountain there might be records or news letters that could be checked?

The MK2 was the same glider modified with the jib sail moved back to overlap the main sail:- http://www.delta-club-82.com/bible/831- ... -circa.htm

To my knowledge there wasn't a club at that time. I was still in high school and Dick Cheney was my main contact. He sewed the sail, supplied the plans and parts for my 16' standard. I haven't maintained communication with him since, but could look him up if I return. Maybe someone on this forum has better knowledge of when the first club was started there and how far back records go.

This probably is not the direction Dayhead was intending, but it's pretty cool.

Hi Joe,

I had seen some of these pictures from the Otto meet. Do you think this could be the glider seen by Brian at The Point Of the Mountain?

I don't know what Joe thinks, but *I* can assure you it was not.

Hi Brian,

How are your drawing skills? Could you sketch the gilder, you saw, and post it here ?

There was one on the Delta-Club-82 site which looked similar to the Platz but with an A frame. The two jib sails could be operated by the pilot from the seated harness position. No details were with the picture but I think it was from Switzerland. I had another look for it but it does not seem to be there now. The sail had blue and white stripes and a lower aspect ratio than mine.
