Hello Long Pham!

Welcome to the U.S. Hawks Hang Gliding Association!!

We are primarily interested in hang gliding in the United States, but you are very welcome to talk about general aviation as well.

You mentioned that Vietnam doesn't have general aviation, but I don't know what that really means. Is it forbidden by law, or does it not exist for some other reason?

Welcome to the US HAWKS.
Recreational flying seems to have slowed down since Covid19.
At least in my area of New Mexico (USA).

Hi US Hawks from North West Texas

Hi US Hawks,

I am new to hang gliding but have dreamt of it most of my life. I actually went to school to be an airline pilot but back then the industry just wasn’t going to be able to carry me, plus other life issues. Either way, I got my private and IFR rating. Have been out of flying for a while but still wanted to hang glide. My Uncle used to hang glide all over the place when I was a kid and it always intrigued me. When visiting him in New Hampshire this month I did some training at a flight park up there. Worked my way up to their 150’ hill but ran out of vacation time. It was an absolute blast and everything I had dreamed of. Unfortunately I feel like I am now stuck in the middle of an area where it seems impossible to get further rated and learn more (Lubbock, Texas). I think I may have some leads in New Mexico, but we will see if they pan out. Anyways, I found the site after watching some folks do some fantastic flying out of some New Mexico areas and digging to see where some of them hang out. And here I am. Very glad to be here and looking forward to reading over the forums!

Guys You positively have no idea it is for Me to be able to do the Things I have been doing as of late. I work on My 1971 Plymouth Road-Runner which I hope to one Day enter in the Silver-State road race. My Car has Subframe Connectors. A Full Chromoly Full Roll Cage. It has a Magnum Force Coil-Over Front Suspension, Rack and Pinion Steering. It will be powered by the Engine that is built and Dyno tuned. My Engine is a !4 to 1 Short-Block. CNC Ported Indy Heads Cylinder Heads Heads. It has a Solid Roller Cam. I hope that My Car will Run 200 Miles an Hour up at the Silver-State Road-Race. I want to just say that this post is on Subject. My Car is a Road-runner. A Road-runner is a flight-Less Bird. But My Bird is going to Fly!

Welcome to the U.S. Hawks!!

We have a small club in Southwest Texas (SW Texas Hang Gliders). The club President is Sam Kellner, and Sam is one of the nicest people on the planet. I haven't talked with him in a while, but maybe he can chime in to let you know about his club. You can also visit the Soutwest Texas Hang Gliders forum here on the U.S. Hawks.

We also have a great club in the Las Cruces New Mexico area named the "Rio Grande Soaring Association". I was just visiting them this weekend in Las Cruces, and they are a really great group of pilots. In fact, our U.S. Hawks Board Chairman is Bill Cummings from that Chapter. You can find their forum here on the U.S. Hawks as well.

I hope those will help. There are also two other forums where you might find help; hanggliding.org ozreport.com. Neither of those forum operators are friendly to the U.S. Hawks, so be careful about what you say. But they do have people who might be able to help.

So I am looking at signing up for the USHGRS but have a(some) question(a). What constitutes “First solo HG flight”? I have flown solo for Private and such but I don’t see a clear analog in HG. I did get my H1 rating through USHPA but I’m not sure if that counts for anything here anyways. Is solo flight just flying without your instructor on the radio with you? Thank you guys for your time.

Hello J,

Joe Faust (USHGA #5) heads up the ratings research team for USHGRS, so his reply would be authoritative. Having said that, I think it would be the first time your feet left the ground in a hang glider without another human being hooked into the glider.

In the early days, almost all first hang gliding flights would be solo. At some point, however, tandem hang gliding instruction became very popular, and many people now make their first flights with an instructor on board. So I think the term "solo" was meant to eliminate confusion with tandem flights.
