This is pretty much what I expected would happen with USHPA sending someone up to analyze the crash site at Jean Lake.
A thread that works it’s way to the bottom of the page from lack of information to post and bump it to the top of the page except for my artificial bump post here.

In the mean time the sport will continue to tow pilots up without the benefit of an in depth accident report that could point out new errors of our ways of doing things or the disregard of following lessons already learned in the past.

All in the realm of Insurance Company Risk Mitigation.
Things used to be different.
Be aware that you have to be safe on your own since putting anything in print would hurt an insurance companies bottom line. Pilot safety doesn’t seem to be the top priority any more. But thank god for insurance right? :roll: Does it look to you that insurance might be putting us at risk or is it just me?

Not just you!

One of the reasons listed for my expulsion was testifying in a case that cost our insurance carrier money. Rather than fix the problems causing the accident and rewarding those who've been calling for oversight, USHPA did the exact opposite.

Same here, Bill. It's not just you.

I've found legal info that places the u$hPa's insurance company in a position of liability. :lol: Sounds funny doesn't it. They provide (third party) liability insurance and, in the way they do it, place themselves in a bad legal position. I won't go into details YET.

But I may speculate a bit -

What's happening is the u$hPa is in an incestuous relationship with their insurance company. Result = Problems with Inbreeding. Inbreeding in this case takes the form of premium fixation over member pilot safety concerns. And this leads to the "Association" violating its own Mission Statement - among a number of things.

And let's not forget about the "Association's" legal counsel. He's responsible for vetting accident info and then NOT releasing certain (safety related) information to the membership.

Sounds like a serious Downward Spiral, if you ask me. Unfortunately, the u$hPa has lost sight of the ground and thinks they are climbing in a pleasant thermal. :problem: :shock:

An org report on the case has been given to some people. Video was not extended but to incident explorers, it seems so in first blush. Holding back the video from the general flight community may be a loss to community-safety potential. Hopefully all will come out for others to examine. More accurate information on one sector's conclusions is invited. In one sense it might be the case that everyone is an instructor somewhat to others; let the information out!

As I heard the story the video could be VERY important in clearly understanding the progression of errors that led to the fatal conclusion.

It also sounds like a situation that could easily happen again in the right (read, wrong/bad) circumstances.

And in connection with who could learn from the incident, . . . ANYBODY who might ever be a tandem passenger (but also HG pilot) could benefit from the added knowledge and forewarning.

Unfortunately, non pilot passengers would not have a clue along these lines regarding what could kill them.

I stayed ambiguous, as I did not see the report and only heard unverifiable details; so it would not be wise to present a third or fourth level "heard" item. Best that we all get the report and see the video. I am guessing the leaks will occur in some forum soon.

However, the topic run has deliberately explored SPECULATIVE scenarios; and we respect speculation without letting such be seen as fact.
So, some speculation continues: Turns and line snagging on wheels might be something to explore along with what to do or not in such speculative scenes. Let's study the video and see what can be seen.
