Roy Haggard

Pete Brock just added to the nominations at WHGA for Roy Haggard.
Roy has been awarded the Flex-Wing Hang Glider Gold Air Award.
Here is Pete's nomination for Roy:

Pete Brock wrote:
As far as awards go that recognize the
contributions to self launched flight, the name that should be most prominent
on this list is Roy Haggard's. He did more to make flex-wing flight safe and
ultimately enjoyable than any other individual I can think of...
So please accept my nomination for Roy. Best, Peter Brock

This topic thread invites a flowering of Roy's aviation life.
He was one of the early Otto members of Self-Soar Association. He was especially inspired through a Low & Slow recommendation for a book on man-powered flight; that got him rolling strongly. He would show at some of our first meets; his first showing was with a very tight-sailed flex-wing hang glider of low-wing loading; he floated ever so slowly, he in excellent control. He would continue his personal investments and ended up pioneering changes that would mark the end of the dominance of the Worth/Richards/Ryan/Others wing in the renaissance and bring in a new level of control and flight enjoyment. His professional life has been chock full of things that very well may interest hang glider designers. I hope many will post things about Roy's aviation life.

Two quotes from: http://www.up-paragliders.com/en/about-us/history
Quote:
However, when Pete Brock gets together with the young designer Roy Haggard, a new concept is born. The Dragonfly is the first tenable post-Rogallo glider and becomes the flagship of their newly founded company, Ultralight Products.

Quote:
The year 1980 also marks the introduction of Roy Haggard's latest pioneering development, the UP Comet. The Comet's outrigger-free construction concept is revolutionary and is still valid today.

At the Otto Meet #45, Roy noted two seeds in his aviation life: 1. Call from Matt Colver where description to build a hang glider was given. 2. Getting inspired from the writings of Keith Sherwin on man-powered flight as obtained through Low & Slow.

During the 2016 Otto L meet at Dockweiler, Roy both flew and affixed his signature to my 1981 UP Comet. :D  He was a very friendly guy and I was amazed and happy to meet him.

I've known Roy since he was a high school kid who started entering and winning our local RC glider contests. He was the one who told me about Rain for Rent irrigation tubing which I used for the leading edges of my Skysail.

Yes, my son Matt Colver gave him the Roallo plans and when Roy returned from Visalia CA (where his folks moved) with the first Dragonfly he said my Skysail was the basis for his going that direction from the Rogallo. I was impressed with how he had developed that glider.

A few years later; Roy and I also saw each other frequently on the Kern River where I rowed a raft and he paddled a kayak.

A truly great guy whom I value as a long time friend. I wish he would make more of our annual Otto meets at Dockweiler.

Frank
