Who was paying for this research? Let me guess.. military industrial complex?
In 1985 I began working in a field that's been called "Artificial Neural Systems" or "Neural Networks" and a few other variations.
Our goal was to figure out how to build smarter computing devices based on what we've learned about biological intelligence (neurons, axons, synapses, etc). We built many kinds of hardware and software simulations of neurons and various learning algorithms. If you search for those terms you'll find all kinds of research in that field (including some of the papers that I published during my time in that field).
We were mostly trying to figure out seemingly simple things like how to recognize hand written characters or how to understand speech. It was paid for through a variety of sources. It was a great career for me because I've had a long-standing interest in both computing and psychology. It allowed me to pursue them both.
