They needed a longer ramp off that pier. I think some of them might have been able to glide a bit better if they'd been able to get above stall speed!!

The first part of the video is the Birdman rally at Selsey on the south coast of England. The structure is the life boat station walkway with some planking ( about 10' long) laid across for a take off platform. I competed in the 1974 and managed a few yards but most of the height was used to gain flying speed before the inevitable dunking in the briny.
