That's pretty cool. Imagine how different our lives would have been if we'd aspired to be flying squirrels instead of eagles.

("Though their life expectancy in the wild is six years, flying squirrels may live fifteen years in captivity."
"Life expectancy for a wild eagle is estimated to be anywhere from 30 to 60 years." -- Wikipedia)

After watching that video and I would have to say that the flying Jeb probably won't make it to a ripe old age if he keeps up stunts like that. The balloon trick alone might have taken a few years off his life.

That is one list you will never see my name on.
What would make people want to do this?

After reading a good portion of the list that Rick posted I can't get it out of my mind.

I had a dream once where I was flying without a wing, arms outstretched over flat ground.
(the farm where I grew up)

It was mostly a short glide sequence but it seemed that I could 'will' some extra glide when I needed to cross a creek. I wonder how much will power for extended glide Jeb was using as he barely squeeked past those balloons?

I had dozens of those dreams as a child. Just like scraping over the ridge in my hang glider and noticing that my toes are all curled stiff.

There may not be anyone measurably more skilled than Corliss at this BJ stuff. Look at his configuration at the moment he hit the balloon. His arms were as far forward as they could go. He was desperate for a better l/d.

Hey Jeb, if you ever read this, step back from the edge and think about this. You've done it. You've given us all this ultimately fantastic gift. And you can't get any closer. You're done. Time for the next step. You're so damned close to the edge you might as well grab a hang glider and jump off the highest mountain you can find. If you don't know how to fly one, you'll figure it out on the way down. The experience just might save your life.

There, I did it. One more step towards anarchy.

Good comments. It was an amazing video!!!

With regard to the flying dreams, I wonder how common that is among HG pilots. When I was young I used to dream that I had figured out a way to arch my body in such a way that I could fly across the room. I would start in one corner and jump into this special arched configuration and it would generate enough lift for me to cross the room (prone) and land on my feet in the far corner.

I haven't had that dream since I was young, and I miss the feeling that it used to give me. On the other hand, I now experience that feeling ... in real life.    :)

Thanks for the posts everyone!!
