SAN DIEGO — Emergency crews came to the rescue Wednesday of a hang glider who crashed onto a steep sea bluff while flying above Black’s Beach and a second man who climbed down the precipice to try to help and got stuck there himself.
The initial accident occurred about 50 feet down the cliff near Torrey Pines Glider Port about 1:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
Lifeguards and firefighters were responding to the crash when they got word of the second stranded man, SDFSD spokesman Lee Swanson said.
Rescuers lowered themselves down to the victims on ropes and then hauled them back to the top of the bluff. Paramedics airlifted the hang glider, who was conscious throughout his ordeal, to Scripps La Jolla Hospital for treatment of a back injury of unknown severity. The second rescued man was uninjured, Swanson said.
The victim told authorities he had a couple years of experience hang gliding and didn't catch enough wind for the chute to properly inflate, causing him to crash into the cliffs below the Glider Port.
