Celebrating Otto - May 27th, 2019

Honoring the rich history and bright future of gliding at Dockweiler Beach

Celebrating Otto - May 27th, 2019

Postby Bob Kuczewski » Mon May 13, 2019 2:33 pm

Hello Aviators Everywhere,

On Monday, May 27th, 2019, I will be at Dockweiler Beach to remember and celebrate the birthday of gliding pioneer Otto Lilienthal.

I would enjoy seeing any friends and gliding enthusiasts who might show up. Anyone wanting to fly must have obtained a signed waiver (free) from Los Angeles Beaches and Harbors.

The most recent waivered person for Dockweiler had been kissed by Elvis Presley at her sweet-16 birthday party.
Photo: the young daughter shown is soon to fly at Dockweiler. She had soaring experience in Hawaii. The shown mother had been a schoolteacher in Culver City, California.

We're still a couple days out, but the weather forecast looks reasonably cooperative for a nice day of flying:

We had a fun day at Dockweiler yesterday.

We had a lot of pilots show up, but unfortunately not everyone could fly because several hadn't completed the County's waiver process. We should make an effort to get more people signed up for the program. We should also come up with a better way to verify participants in the program.

We had Little Hawk set up for introductions, and we had Frank's Condor 330 and my Alpha 210 set up for flying. All 3 were in service all day, and we did a lot of flying with Frank's latest swing seat revision.

I didn't get everyone's names, but from memory:

Joe Faust
Frank Colver
Jerry Katz
Dave Beardslee
Shane
Ken Manatt
Bob Kuczewski
Martin ? (Jaeger ... thanks to Joe Faust on next post)

There were a number of other pilots whose names I can't quite recall.

Shane made her first hang gliding flights.     :salute:

It was a fun day with lots of fun flying. Thanks again, Otto!!
