Dockweiler dunes and LAX "back in the day".

Honoring the rich history and bright future of gliding at Dockweiler Beach

Dockweiler dunes and LAX "back in the day".

I just talked to a retired American Airlines pilot who used to fly out of LAX. I mentioned the hang gliding still going on at Dockweiler Beach and he told me something surprising, I had not heard before.

He said that before the 707 and fan jet engines on the airliners, they used water injection to boost power on takeoff. When the dunes north of Dockweiler, off the end of the runways, would build up height the pilots would go over there with shovels and shovel the top sand down the slope to give more clearance during takeoffs. :o

Wow :!:

That's a great story Frank!!!

That's the kind of personal responsibility and "get it doneness" that seems to be growing in the FDGS!!
