Oz Forum Migrating to FaceBook

Postby Bob Kuczewski » Fri Dec 25, 2020 9:20 am

On December 17th, 2020, The Oz Report wrote:Moving to a new server and to Facebook

Over the weekend Scare moved the Oz Report to a new server (keeping it also going on the old one at PAIR for a while). Scare has direct access to this server and it is where he hosts other accounts. There were a few minor glitches, but it seems to work now with a little manual help from Scare (moving over pictures).

The PAIR server will still be operating through December and then the Oz Report will no longer be up on PAIR, but just on the new host.

This is in anticipation of focusing the Oz Report on its Facebook page. That basically means that at least starting in January there won't be five days a week emails coming out from the Oz Report. Also the Oz Report on the new server won't be updated. All new updates will happen on the Oz Report on Facebook.

I've been running the Oz Report on Facebook for a couple of years now and it has been more and more the case that I am curating (collecting) content from Facebook instead of receiving content by email. This is how pilots are communicating now.

Unfortunately, the downside is that the push of email goes away with Facebook. The upside is that is is much easier for me to share content and I get a lot more feedback. So we'll see what the future brings.

The Oz Report forum is still operational, as are the classified ads.

We won't we asking for donations in the future as the costs of the new server are greatly reduced (due to the reduced server load).

Feel free to respond or comment.

This won't affect me since I don't use OZ report. I tried to join once but couldn't answer their question / riddle to prove I wasn't a robot (I posed the question to BobK and he couldn't answer it either). But this brings up issues I've had over other organizations I belong to also going to more focus on Facebook. I don't use FB and don't intend to start.

I don’t use Facebook even though Facebook has warned me through email that
someone has hacked my account (that I never signed up for) and that I only had
a short time to address the issues before my account was locked down.
(I didn’t respond.) So for all of my followers on Facebook (Where I’ve never been.)
I’m hoping none of you were ever offended by someone posing as me that unfriended
you. My only possible disgrace is that I’ve never friended anyone in my many years
of never having been there.

I agree with your sentiments, Bill.

Martin wrote:First off, I want to thank Davis for all the years of managing this forum and the Oz Report (ooops best not forget Scare!). I for one have appreciated the depth of debate and content.

The content of the forum has aged, fewer and fewer participants, less and less debate and content. Still, It's nice to have a place to occasionally discuss and debate, tho, much less than the glory days?

What I find sad with the drift to F-Book is what (to me) appears to be a lack of content. Keep in mind, (sadly) I have joined F-Book and really don't get it. The BS about "likes", the "people you may know" all click bate and the dumbing down of intellect… or is that "Twitter"? … Must admit… after nearly a week of trying to look at F-Book, I don't get it.

When I look at the F-Book Oz Page you see a recent post, usually a picture without comment, maybe a paragraph… comments seem to be dumbed down even more. They all just disappear without any meaningful life. It also seems to focus on cell phone addicts and their vertical screen formats and short attention spans… not much room room for expansive debate… not that we do that anymore.

It's been a blast to have had this forum, plenty of posts I regret but like a good debate around the camp fire or bar with a dozen empties fueling incoherent conversations the "Golden Age" is done.

Thanks and Merry Christmas let's hope 2021 brings us better times…

Martin

Martin, the reason there's no debate on the Oz Forum (or on hanggliding.org) is that anyone with enough of a backbone to speak up has already been either banned or has left on their own before being banned. All that's left are those willing to be politically correct in the eyes of Davis and Jack.

With all respect, you were flying before the Eagle. The request for more signature is for others to follow

DAVIS STRAUB Refused to address any issues or discuss his affiliation with the commercialization of the Gliderport and his role in discussing only selective issues, on Oz Report Org, which is dividing us further. Besides, he did seem to like the petition but not the wording, or my approach. After some advice, he refused to comment further. Then shut down his profile and blocked me out after a chat on OZ-FB, messenger...

P.S. No hard feelings, We could all end up friends, it comes down to addressing the issues to "End the Dispute"

I have taken a vow, years ago, to never join Facebook.Dweebus Blob migrating Oz there is completely understandable, considering the source's dubious known history and ethical bent.

Davis Straub's Iron Curtain Oz Report will fit in well on Facebook.

Facebook bans Trump from posting for remainder of his term in office

Facebook blocks Trump through end of presidency 01:38

(CNN)Facebook and Instagram will ban President Donald Trump's account from posting for at least the remainder of his term in office and perhaps "indefinitely," Mark Zuckerberg said in a blog post on Thursday.

"We believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great," the Facebook CEO wrote in the post. "Therefore, we are extending the block we have placed on his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely and for at least the next two weeks until the peaceful transition of power is complete."

The decision marks a major escalation by Facebook as it and other platforms have come under intense pressure from advocacy groups and prominent figures to ban Trump following his inflammatory rhetoric encouraging insurrection.

Facebook and Twitter took the extraordinary step on Wednesday of temporarily locking President Donald Trump's account on their platforms after his supporters stormed the Capitol building to protest the election.

If the latest restrictions hold, Facebook could be the first major platform to remove Trump permanently.

Facebook's move now raises expectations for Twitter, known for being the president's preferred social media platform, to follow suit. Twitter has confirmed that Trump deleted several tweets in order to regain his tweeting privileges sometime on Thursday, though the company declined to say when precisely he would be able to tweet again.

Twitter also said that "future violations... will result in permanent suspension of the @realDonaldTrump account."

"There's this element of all the companies hand-wringing until one of them takes a step, and then in a few minutes, everyone does it," said Adam Sharp, Twitter's former head of news, government and elections. "Nobody wants to be the first, and they just take turns on who is going to be the first one to go that time around. Then they all 'Thelma and Louise' it and make the call."

The underlying problem facing most tech platforms, he said, is that the gravity of Trump's misconduct goes far beyond the companies' efforts to build standardized systems for punishing misbehavior.

In his blog post Thursday, Zuckerberg said Facebook had determined that Trump's recent posts were "likely" intended to escalate the violence rather than the opposite.

Trump has shown he "intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden," Zuckerberg wrote.

Facebook has already described the events surrounding Trump's posts this week as an emergency. Now, Zuckerberg has finally revealed where Facebook will draw the line for Trump — at nothing less than a deadly assault on Congress.

It is a little irritating to see the Oz Report migrate to facebook in 2021. That's about ten years after the company has been exposed as a substantial data leech.
