John J. Montgomery ... a kind of US Hawk provides an interesting grace to hang gliding. Notes, links, illustrations, etc. are invited to well show his story. Random start, someone commentary via video: [[How true is the replica? How accurate the statements?]] Title: 1911 "Evergreen" glider - Prof. John J. Montgomery killed near San Jose during its test flight. |

Quote: Good find, Rick Masters. The article had long time ago been seen. But your bringing forward the clip from The San Francisco Call, Jan. 25, 1910, urges us to get the full article up in the US Hawks forum. The vertical height of the clip may be cut to segments. I can do that or you; what say you? About the "30 years" ago note by the reporter in the 1910 article computes to 1880, but I caution that the report may be a haste rounding of year rather than accurate. See: http://www.flyingmachines.org/mont.html where the expected note appears: "He began his own aerial experiments in late August of 1883" "In 1884 he constructed a monoplane glider with curved wing surfaces, in which he made a glide of some considerable length, from Otay Mesa, near San Diego, California." Nice clipping. Thanks! At your permission, I'll put up the article in segments to fit the forum coding. There's a vertical wing in honor of Montgomery in a local park here in San Diego. When I was getting my training with John Heiney, he took me to see it. I think I have a picture somewhere, but I might have to do some digging to find it. Also, one of our local airports is named ... Montgomery Field. Thanks for the flow Joe!!! |

Thanks further to Rick Masters for his research in newspapers for that article. And he found another article which will will present soon where one is invited to focus on James "Jimmy" P. Montgomery, the brother of John. James kited launched John for that 1884 600 ft flight. We had our Montgomery Meet on the same site in the early 1970s. The wing monument is seen in a photo at the wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Joseph_Montgomery The clipping by Rick Master from The Franklin Evening Star, 26 Aug 1930, Tue, Page 6: http://www.newspapers.com/clip/1634492/ ... _franklin/ Attachment: FS1930clip01.JPG [ 89.2 KiB | Viewed 11081 times ] |

Ken de Russy found Gallant Journey and wonders how the involved gliders actually flew. Details on how the movie was made would be interesting. Gallant Journey A clumsy, highly romanticized, technically and historically inaccurate - ridiculous but cute! - film about John Montgomery (1946) Watch the entire movie: https://archive.org/details/GallantJourneyNtsc |
