Jim Hobson or James Hobson http://RogalloHangGliders.com/JimHobson/index.html Photo and some story. Important research yet to be done by someone. Anyone? It was EASY for EAA editor in 1962 to write "Rogallo Wing Hang-Glider" and that ease is telling. |

Good news just reported: Joe Greblo of Windsports reported that he had seen Jim Hobson about a year ago. So, maybe someone will make direct contact soon with Jim. Maybe some leads could come from: http://www.welkshow.com/ or http://www.welkmusicalfamily.com/ One posible lead would be Jack Imel Quote: Jack Imel is an accomplished tap dancer, musician, comedian and producer, best know for his long tenure on the Lawrence Welk Show. Jack was born on June 9th in Portland, IN. Starting at age four, he began taking tap dancing lessons, that later led to other talents like comedy, playing the triangle, the ukelele and the marimba (xylophone). As a young man, he performed in clubs, concerts, talent shows, theaters and county fairs and later did a tour in the Navy. He joined the Lawrence Welk Show in 1957 with an abundance of energy and ideas, so much so that a couple of years later, Lawrence and executive producer Jim Hobson gave Jack duties of Associate Producer. Jack also was in charge of the show's road tours and did comedy skits with Jo Ann Castle, the Lennon Sisters and Mary Lou Metzger. He lives today in Cathedral City, California with his wife of fifty years Norma. Jack continues to perform both nationally at fairgrounds, theatres and cruise ships across the US and Canada. wiki on the possible lead bridge contact: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Imel Imel has been married to his wife Norma since 1951. They currently reside in Springville, California.[1][2] Although retired from the Welk organization, he continues to be involved in entertainment as part of the audition committee for the City of Porterville City of Hope Spectacular.[3] He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Porterville Auxiliary of the City of Hope. Norma J. Imel is wife of Jack Imel. |

https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Lawrence-Welk-Show/39206223571?v=info I wrote a letter to Springville, CA Chamber of Commerce hoping they will give note to Jack or Norma Imel that requests lead to James Hobson. BUT ANOTHER SOURCE has Imel in Cathedral City, CA So, not sure. Wrote to a Tulare County entity where Jack Imel and Norma are sustaining members. Requested bridge contact. Lawrence Jack Imel was early full name. Photo of Jack Imel younger: http://www.welknotes.com/2009_pages/200 ... _terry.htm Possible further lead to Jim Hobson http://www.welknotes.com/2009_photos_links.htm Note on that last site that teases that if we find Jack, then we might find Jim Hobson. Note: In one show hosted by Jim, the actor Jack Imel was dressed as an Hawaiian bird. DIRECTOR / PRODUCER JAMES HOBSON 1955-1982 ASSOCIATE PRODUCER JACK IMEL 1965-1982 |

Attachment: Attachment: Two sides of a paper I typed in early 1970s as I borrowed from Jim his materials. I believe I misspelled his name on my sheet. The last name is with two o characters and not any e. Good: Hobson. PDFs attached: |

EAA clip of 1962 Mentioned is a musical sequence; we would like to see a clip of that show for that sequence where the hang glider was on set. Sequences in the Welk shows often had titles; I wonder what the title of the subject sequence was? Song? Musical score? Date of the first showing of the main show in 1962? Help; thanks. The EAA photo was taken someplace; identification of the property where the photo was taken would be neat. What do you see in the photo? Do you see a swimming pool's entrance ladder? Some possible lead might stem from details on: http://www.oeta.tv/welk/bios/bio.html Maybe the following entity has an archived copy of the original show that held the hang glider: http://www.seeing-stars.com/museums/Mus ... sion.shtml Hopeful is this comment on that site: "Well, you can see (and hear) it all at the Museum of Television and Radio, where visitors can sit down before one of fifty TV consoles and call up their favorite television programs from days gone by, or don earphones to listen to historic radio broadcasts." That site's link to the new museum is incorrect. Name change: http://www.paleycenter.org/ http://www.paleycenter.org/visit-visitla

We know where to find you, Bob! Near the food on Second Sundays. ==================================================== Jim Hobson had coverage in EAA and on television. As yet, we do not know if he had newspaper coverage. On Jim's loan-to-Low & Slow list was an item: Harper's Aircraft Book. Such was part of Jim's roots for his standard Rogallo wing hang glider. We may be in luck here, as Google is hosting the full book free online: Harper's Aircraft Book: Why Aeroplanes Fly, how to Make Models, and All ... By Alpheus Hyatt Verrill See full book; click through the title. Book published in 1913. Studying that book might give more clues about Jim's sense of what he was about with his hang glider. |

Jim has flown into the Next Thermal on Friday, April 26, 2013, Santa Monica, California, Santa Monica Hospital. Rest in peace, Jim. Jim, ... again Thank You for your rich life of adventure, leadership, pioneering, and more. His nephew shared the news of Jim's passing. Complications after a needed surgery was just too much. Long life. Many will miss Jim! Jim and Elsie did not have any children. Jim home was in Bel Air, just north of Beverly Hills, California. James Hobson (Jim Hobson) inaugurated the hang gliding renaissance at Dockweiler Beach with his own-built Rogallo hang glider, project started in 1961 and shown to world several ways in 1962, including national TV on the Lawrence Welk Show, and to the membership of the Experimental Aircraft Association. . More soon. |
