US Hawks Hang Gliding Association :: View topic

Hi George,
The US Hawks is going forward to focus just on airframed hang gliding. Other orgs have been overtaken with canopy soaring parachute paragliders to some loss of service for airframed hang gliders. It is a time of renewal and retrenching. I started a topic thread on George Uveges. Any notes or photos and captions you wish to place there can be sent to me for such publishing. The topic thread will search, find, and replay much of the George Uveges items that we can find in soaring and hang gliding. Fun.

One of the great photos by George Uveges was of Richard Miller's Conduit Condor being flown at the great Otto Meet.

Lloyd L. sold me for $1 an old out-of-commission small offset printing press that Soaring Society of America held fully unused.

Sailplane & Gliding, October-November 1966, page 344, Californian Holiday by Fred Slingsby. In March of 1966, Fred visited USA. His story included the following note regarding April visit in Los Angeles:

The hang gliding renaissance story of mid last century would not be complete without a full appreciation of George Uveges George Uveges He is still with us living in Santa Monica, CA. His inroads to Soaring Society of America, Self-Soar Association, and early USHGA(s)(both) via communications, friendships, and timely photography amounts to a special chapter in the history of our sport. I just invited him to consider posting legacy notes in our forum hereon.

George Uveges shares the historical renaissance HG guru (former editor of Soaring magazine for Soaring Society of America) (editor of 1960s "Low, Slow, and Out of Control" newsletter with about 30 members in its group --- including Klaus Hill) Richard Miller at Dockweiler shown below; circa 1965. Photography by George Uveges. He used film and had his darkroom at home; he would convert his kitchen frequently. For many years he was well known as a top sailplane photographer. George was a rated sailplane pilot. Copyright by George Uveges; use needs his permission. The National Soaring Museum holds many slides and prints by George Uveges. Many of George's photographs became covers of Soaring magazine. George accompanied me when I shopped for and purchased a special camera that I used for making lithographic negatives from papered images for use in Low & Slow and Hang Glider and Hang Glider Business Weekly, etc. He was lending his photographic expertise to the renaissance of hang gliding publishing. He lived just a block away from the Santa Monica airport. At that time circa 1960-70, the Soaring Society of America was based at the Santa Monica Airport; Lloyd was MIT educated. George was close friends in the 1960s with HG guru Richard Miller. Lloyd Licher was executive director of the Soaring Society of America 1957 – 1976 (19 years); George frequented the office. George would often work directly with Doug Lamont the editor of Soaring Magazine at the time when I first met George. Lloyd introduced me to Doug Lamont and Lianna Lamont. Doug Lamont published my first letter-to-the-editor in Soaring magazine. It was my special experience to sit with Doug L. and describe my visions of the unfolding hang gliding; we discussed some tensions the HG renaissance would form within the sailplane fraternity. Lloyd L. sold me for $1 an old out-of-commission small offset printing press that Soaring Society of America held fully unused. I had a little offset printing experience in my first early job at Douglas Aircraft. But I had to study from scratch how to ungunk the non-running printing press. Paul Wahl, author, sent me a U.S. Navy manual on offset printing. Finally I got the machine going and printed some Low & Slow with the machine. The machine would find its way into the small attic of my Venice home. Using funds from the Dial Soap HG TV commercial, I replaced the machine with a large printing press that permitted printing on 11"x17" paper for the larger Hang Glider magazine. Dick printing press! In George Uveges' cover photo, note the virga as George Worthington comes in to land. The sky was very similar on the day of his death, when the Wanderer came apart on September 11, 1982. I have always felt that it was a huge mistake for the SSA not to take hang gliding under its wings in the early years, rather than to decide to mostly ignore it and allow it to struggle disastrously on its own. The decision was, after all, at odds with its founding principals. I thought it took some courage for Soaring editor Bob Said to break the ten-year ban in 1987 with the publication of "Explorations of the Thermal Snooper." https://web.archive.org/web/20090909154 ... Jack Lasiter bought Bowlus Sailplanes, Inc. from Hawley Bowlus. Don Mitchell was Hawley's apprentice. He went on to build the Mitchell Wing.

If anyone out there knows how I might obtain a print of that Soaring Society mag. cover photo of Worthington on final glide in the Mitchell Wing I'm really interested. I'm interested in creating a framed print of the original photo.
