Mag Rim faces SW and will take a wind SW to SSW. Any direction more west than SW brings turbulence. If scroll bar is to the right of attachment click on the attachment to see the forecast wind direction for Deming which is SW of Mag Rim very close to straight up wind. If scroll bar is to the right of attachment click on the attachment to see the forecast wind direction for Las Cruces which is SE of Mag Rim. Days history for Deming which is SW of Mag Rim. Days history for today. Las Cruces which is SE of Mag Rim. NEVER TRUST A FORECAST.

At this point in time I think we need to hold and emergency meeting in the hopes of saving our clubs weatherman from transitioning completely over to the dark side. Maybe even invoke a level three prayer meeting. Or at the very least keep an eye out for future backsliding. I have watched our club weatherman’s posts with increasing trepidation as he is moving slowly in the direction of the dark side. He is slowly, almost unnoticeably, adopting the speech patterns of those previously turned souls at the NWS. Just look at previous posts and you will find these quotes that I now list: “north and northwest,” “north and northeast,” “east and southeast,” “south and southwest,” To say, “south and southwest,” is like saying the pregnancy is in the 2nd AND 3rd trimester. It is the same as saying, the winds will be south and southwest but absolutely not SSW or WSW. Verily I say unto thee - these be from the list of buzz words used by the sooth sayers at the NWS. Tell tale buzz words to look for spoken by the lost souls are easy to spot for those bless with the power of discernment. Watch for the phrases that give their minions away such as: “upper tier of states, for the most part, moving on through here, storms firing up, for your Sunday, for your Monday, for your Tuesday, for your Wednesday, for your Thursday, for your Friday, for your Saturday, as we speak, southern tier of states. By the way what’s the forecast for next week? ![]() REFERENCE: "Deuteronomy 18:10-13 - There shall not be found among you [any one] that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, [or] that useth divination, [or] an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,---"

In one post I said never trust a weather forecast and in the next post I alluded to Robin as being our clubs weatherman. I know what I typed but what the reader must understand is that they have to go away with what I meant to say and not what I say. Got it? Robin is among the old pilots down here that really understand how the weather works. I think I just did it again. Robin is among the experienced pilots down here that understand how the weather works. The written/typed word is a dangerous thing and I usually find myself on my back with its foot on my neck. So I’m just trying to head off a flame war with Robin. ![]() My wife Terry says, “Bill, the only time you open your mouth is to change feet.” ![]() (This woke me up at 2 in the morning.)
Re: Flying possibilities2014 Canadian National Hang Gliding Champion John Theoret (said like theoretically) and Robin Hastings, John's site guide, at Magdalena Rim northwest of Las Cruces NM USA. John came back after a year absence. An absence due to border patrol red tape, flaming hoops to jump through and delays fabricated by the Department of Redundancy Department. Only John should tell his story of dealing with government officials that is frustrating enough to turn any Pope into a murderer. (Serial.) I (Bill C.) was too busy launching Robin after John to get any picture of Robin launching. Robin had a good landing in the dry river bed landing zone. John had a hour and fifty minute flight and a good landing. The following day, 11-8-14 I would be John’s site guide for an east facing site called Anapra. It sits up tight against the fence separating New Mexico (USA) and Mexico. Great care must be taken not to over fly the border fence into Mexican Airspace. This could result in being shot out of the sky, by me, so that we don’t get kicked out of here. I hope to get this rule ratified at our next meeting. Things looked different so we asked directions to drive up top and the Border Patrol Agent said, “Follow Me.” He lead us all the way to launch. I parked my Xterra right on the rim as a windbreak for John to tie to and set up in the rotor. There is just enough room for set up due to a near by fence along the rim. The inversion was lifting the wind and we missed anything but a sled ride this day. (11-8-14) November 10 - 2015 I did the Guide Duty along with Hadley Robinson at Transmountain Highway at the wayside rest stop, The site faces west. Dave Church was available by phone for launching advice. I tied myself to the concrete wall so as not to fall over the edge as noseman and with Hadley on the right wing wire of John’s T2C 138 John setting up in the rotor on Transmountain wayside over looking El Paso TX. USA) John flew north up the Franklin Mountains and after a hour landed on the blacktop leading into the state park. (Photos blurry, erased) Next John and I went back to Anapra to meet Nate Wreyford of Austin, Texas on November 13, 2014. Nate was in El Paso TX on business (Ahem) and just happened to have his T2C along with him. I twanged them off of the launch and below you see them both up over the Rim of east facing Anapra. The camera is looking south the mountains in the background are in Mexico. Nate could have spit on the border fence. Also see Nate’s video of this flight with some sound editing problems.
Desert SW thermal season starts in AprilWhen I’m searching for thermals while stupidly going cross country with my hang glider I have used the long taught 270 degree flounder method.
That all came to an abrupt halt one day while I was waiting for a team flying pilot to catch up to me. While burning off 2 k of altitude to make the rendezvous and just for giggles I traced a maneuver in the sky that for years after no one could figure it out and thus was born (quite by happenstance) a more effective method of efficiently finding and holding thermals. I was merely, in cursive, writing my name in the sky, (No Smoke,) Here is a GPS track simulation: From the top it was eventually easy for someone watching to figure out the pattern maneuver but from the ground it appeared either backwards or upside down. (This is why it took so long for the secret to be revealed.) So when thermal seasons starts again this coming April 1st I’ll be watching from the ground and the really smart pilots will be easy to spot. ![]() ![]()

That sure was fun in November. I'm always willing to stretch 1 day's work into 3 if I can squeeze flying in ![]() I still want to soar Mag Rim and I am interested in the Transmountain Hwy. I am assuming that the hwy launch really needs some kind of stair, etc to get a glider over? I wish I could see John's vid of that flight. I wish him the best at the worlds. He is a flying machine! Not sure what the weather holds in store for President's Day - you might see me at the rim! Nate

At Mag Rim today from looking at the Las Cruces history there would only have been a short soarable moment from 2 pm to 3pm. 4pm to 5 pm may have worked also.
