Burke Ewing with newbie rider in tandem in 1978 had a beaking splat
that invites one to think of Safe-Splat solutions:

What would an UL version look like?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landing_gear The "Light Aircraft" section of that wiki does not address the full range of landing-gear options for hang gliders. Authors might cure the matter eventually. HG landing gear: shoes, barefeet, legs, wheels, skids, skis, Safe-splat devices :thumbup: , spoons, beaking-making raw basebars, rollers, harness bottoms, floats, ... And sometimes: bushes, trees, .... and worse: wires, antenna, cars :(

The mechanical bird was deliberately built with some sacrificial material for use in splats in order to remain safe.

HGs may deliberately have sacrificial materials to be involved in splats.

Octave Chanute had the pilot NOT tied to the wing.
Say HG flies over the Dockweiler ocean water ..... THEN, if the pilot was "Chanuted" (NOT tied to the wing),
then the pilot could drop away from the wing before contacting the water; such would give a chance
for the pilot to enter the water and waves without the risk of being water-wave-wrapped with sail and frame.
There was an early 1900s cartoon showing a hang glider pilot doing just such; we have somewhere in forum
a copy of that cartoon. Greblo's offers of gear does not do the "Chanuted" method, as it is common to be tied to the wing;
while loop and carabiner and hang lines are under tension, then one does not get away from the wing.
When at altitude with rescue chute deployment, HG parachutes while still tied to the wing frame in order to keep
some frame as an energy absorbing device ... and not putting the wing-frame into downwind flight where it might
do damage to people and property ... and perhaps give some drag to help on the parachuting effort ...

Several photos show a shock-absorber whack-cushioning assembly. Still, the pilot swinging through in a stopped basebar would need to consider if pithing would occur. Broken necks are to be avoided; pithing is to be avoided. I did not see a mention of limit lines in the discussion, but I have not reviewed the full group yet.
