Hi Duke,

I sent you a PM suggesting that you might start a Blog about your adventure into hang gliding. I'm sure many of us would enjoy following your progress and offering our help along the way. Just start a new topic in the Blog Forum and open it with a short post that gives an overview of your topic and either invites people to comment or advises that you'd like it to be more of a monologue (your choice).

Blogs are like your own private club forum where you're the boss of what stays or goes. Just use the "Report" button to tag posts that you'd like changed or removed, and I'm pretty good about following your request. Feel free to send me a PM if you'd like more information.

Mostly, it was super to see you come from such a far distance to celebrate Otto's birthday with us.

Hi Duke,

The US Hawks is a little more difficult to find than some of the other sites. So we don't get a lot of new pilots. It usually takes many years in the hang gliding community to get to appreciate what we're building here. You're unusual in that you've found us so early in your flying.   

The good thing (as you could tell by the average ages you saw at the meet) is that we probably have centuries of experience on this forum. Most every one of us would be happy to help a newer pilot get started. If you start a blog topic requesting advice, I'll bet you'll get plenty of it.

The US Hawks is an experiment to see if we can build a grass roots hang gliding organization. Your blog would be another dimension in that experiment. Give it a try and see what happens!!

The only dumb question is the one that's not asked. So any thing you're not sure about, and especially the things you are sure about, (because you may have bum info), be sure and come here to get our opinions on the matter.

Hang Gliding, like any form of aviation, is dangerous. So keeping that in mind, never hesitate to tell us what you've been told, and always get a second opinion before you act on any info you've received.

There are very few questions in aviation that can be answered with a simple "yes or no".

Most often, the correct answer is "That depends..."

Because of this, you're really on your own. So speak up, and be heard.

"Old" is relative ... especially if you hung out very long at the Otto Meet/Reunion. I think 92 was near the top of the age range. You're still a spring chicken (or spring Hawk?).

Hello US Hawks.

My name is Henry. I'm an H-2 pilot from New York and started hang gliding last summer. To date I've practiced take-offs and landing via a 30' hill in my local club area and have practiced air skills via scootertow to about 100' (relatively short flights). On the education side I've read Dennis Pageans Hang gliding Instruction Manual and info in other forum stuff and Q&As with my instructor.

I've read some of the posts in this form and I find them very direct and informative. I look forward to bouncing ideas off of each other.

Liking your 30' hill practice. For me, such is much more than practice; the opportunity to have many launches and landings is upping joy. The physical exercise and challenge to fine-tune senses relative to wing and relative wind is challenging and fun. Your intro qualifies you to an ever-open membership in Friends of Dockweiler Gliding Society.
