Hi Joe,

I posted the following on the 5 foot packable glider topic, but I thought it might fit here as well. Please feel free to respond in either place.

The air spar sounds a bit exotic, and I'm not sure about how it would hold up under axial compression.

But I like the idea of taking a regular glider (maybe someone's worn out Falcon?) and fitting it with:

• A mechanism to easily remove the sail from the frame
• Sleeves to join longer tubes after cutting for short packing

I think that's a practical approach and could be accomplished fairly easily within our abilities.

SlapSki for Safe-Splat?
ARP had what appears to be a "SlapSki" where the ski is held (with perhaps a bungee) at a high angle of attack; when the ground is met, the rear of the SlapSki meets the ground first; then the SlapSki rotates and slaps the ground for a full-flat skiing action.

This turned out to be a relatively minor event, but with a good "safe splat" system, it wouldn't have happened at all.

I would like to explore a quick-chest-drop-down hook to couple upper torso to the basebar for limiting forward position of the torso when intended wheel landing in sand.
Swing-through can break necks and even bring worse. Limit line would work the momentum to drive the wheels or ski beyond touchdown frictions.

Joe, Just a quick thought that I should really have worked through to refinement but this just popped into my head:
We all know about the seatbelt (chest strap) giving us some slack to lean forward.
But under moments of accelerated inertia the chest belt will bind up and prevent forward movement.

Times when this idea is just short of genius is when coming down a steep hill in a vehicle and you try to lean forward slowly but the mechanism in this situation will bind up and not allow forward movement. (Real bummer.)

How about running a bicycle brake cable that is activated only when the wheels come under load (when coming in contact with the ground) the activated cable now prevents forward movement of the pilot by stopping the belt from paying out? (It locks up!)

Said differently the belt travel is always in freewheel mode unless the bicycle brake cable locks it up. It can only lock up when the wheels hinge or travel upward maybe by as much as one inch.
An idea that needs more people working on it.

There would always be enough slack to pull on lots of speed but once activated would not allow the pilot to swing forward enough to come in contact with the keel.
Second EDIT-- PS
Maybe a belt retract mechanism on the left corner of the control bar that would hook to the pilots left side main strap. It would swing the pilot to the left side of the keel.
Left side install to stay clear of the VG side.
Third EDIT--
It should have a quick release at the pilot.

Sounds like you are getting closer to producing more Little Hawks
