Michael G.,
That takes the cake (you were the cake man at the Otto Marker Day). Supper Otto Lilienthal find.
Thank you.
Thanks to Johannes Hogebrink for his insight and excellent production work.
And for the museum for preserving the elements!

Wow!

That might be playing daily at the monument at Dockweiler Recreational Hang Gliding Park. Press a button and watch the video?????
What would a stable solution be for that to happen? Set out a locked video player when site is open? Solar powered? Windsports brochure next to the item?

In a book's section The Idea of Flight National Park Service wrote:The second, and more significant development, was that of the German engineer Otto Lilienthal, who was the first to launch himself into the air and fly. He built monoplane, biplane, and triplane gliders--eighteen variations in all--and conducted experiment after experiment that tested their flying abilities. He earned the title the "father of aerial testing" with his more than two thousand glider flights, some which covered distances of over a thousand feet (300 meters) before he died as a result of a crash landing in 1896.

...

Ever since Milton brought home the helicopter toy, Wilbur and Orville had an interest in aviation. They followed the accounts of the German gliding pioneer, Otto Lilienthal, with great interest. Lilienthal's death in 1896 inspired the brothers to seriously investigate flight.

The author(s) had some further comments about Otto L. : http://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/aviation/text.htm#ideaflight
