A personal swamp cooler!     Good tip Bill!!

Re: Flying possibilities were low yesterday

Postby Bill Cummings » Sun Jul 24, 2016 5:32 am

Up on the west mesa at KLRU (Las Cruces International Airport) Weather history was showing 102º yesterday.
Down here in the Rio Grande Valley one mile from the Rio (river) I had two thermometers showing 111º.
Even in the winter I've noticed a spread of 5 to 10 degrees.
When the low for the airport was saying 38º the water in my bird bath was froze.
So far I haven't heard that yesterday the power company needed to pull off power to part of our grid.

Mike E. and I talked today and we are looking to Saturday for a tentative play date at Dry Canyon.
We will check the weather Friday afternoon and make a decision as to Go or No Go.
Robin has work related things to do tomorrow morning and later we may be ironing the Mylar in the leading edges of my Sport 2.
Well now that I re read that it might be easier to take the Mylar out of the leading edges and then iron them.

PPG Treasure Hunt

Postby JanZ » Fri Jul 29, 2016 12:43 pm

Hi Guy's,
just a reminder, the "PPG Treasure hunt get together" is going to be this weekend.

Here's the plan, if it's not unflyable.

I'll be at the Balloon Field Alamogordo Saturday July, 30th from around 5pm till about 9pm for either some free training,
the precision task, to fly xc with you guys or just to hang out, all depending on the weather.

On Sunday July, 31st I'll be there around 5am to get everything ready. Meeting is at 6am and I expect the first take off around 6:30am.
Everybody who wants to do the precision task and hasn't done it on Saturday will do it on Sunday morning and then we'll get the Fuel task going. (latest 8ish)

If you want to fly the Fuel economy task, you'll need a way to take digital photos while flying and about 2 Gal. of Fuel.

Everybody is welcome, to drop by and fly the tasks with us, fly just for fun or to watch and hang out, any time.

You should bring:

-Drinks
-Food
-Sunscreen
-Hat
-Flying Gear
-Fuel

I'll keep you posted if something changes.

I'll edit this post as more word about flying at Dry Canyon gets to me tonight.
Mike E thinks it looks ify and I do too. Then the updated thunderstorm chance on Launch Code went up to 49%.
There is a 12 mph wind from the SSE to SE on the Artesia side of the mountains. Clouds all day have been out of the east, reports Dave Church.
Hold the press----
Robin called and more models are disagreeing and it should be good early. So I will call Taro to find out if he wants to meet in the LZ at 9:30 tomorrow.
I will be the driver.
Edit 08:48
Taro didn't pick up. Which glider does he want tomorrow if he meets us there at 9:30?

This morning Launce Code is calling for 54% thunderstorms on both sides of the mountain.
Get this --- Weatherundergouund is calling for clear.
My choice to only drive today is still optimistic since my next choice would be to carry pilots kicking and screaming into the storm cellar.
Oh well such is the life of the day's volunteer driver. (Drivers not in command.)

!! Towing Time !!
I just got a text that said a fellow Pilot needs help to dial in his new Winch, and by coincidence I don't have my Kids this weekend.
So Wyatt and I are going to meet on Saturday morning in LC to do that and as soon as that's done everybody is welcome to get in a bunch of tows, either on my rig or his.
I'll camp out so we can start super early. Let me know if you're coming!!

Hey Jan,
Terry will be back from her week long trip tomorrow so she hasn't made up my mind yet as to what I want to do  :!: :shh: :shifty:
If I'm free I might be able to do some support logistics like chase, (in my air conditioned Xterra) or show up late if you start real early.
I won't have my HG along since the other day I was injured by a refrigerator.
With my left hand on the chest high opened door I was straightening up with a 7.5 FL OZ Dr. Pepper can in the other hand when something let go in my left shoulder. :wtf: This came as a complete surprise since I've been lifting weights for about a month.
I can still lift weights but I just can't seem to straighten up with the help of the top of the refrigerator door.
I won't waste my time asking for help with this problem because I know that this BS never happens to anyone else.
I can do spotter or radio stuff.
I'll get back to you after checking with the boss.

Hey Bill,
I hope you didn't hurt yourself too bad.
Help is always appreciated!!
It looks like we might get another 1 or 2 PG Pilots that Day, so maybe some xc is going to happen.
We probably tow Friday evening, depending on how good a Buddy of mine does and how much time I have to spare.
On Saturday towing will start before 7am and I'll stop slinging up PG's around 9:30ish, if somebody wants to fly his HG after that, I'll be happy to tow HG's longer.
So if there's no HG's there, we'll not be there much later than 10am.
