Ben Cowen would be alive and well right now had he been flying a hang glider instead of a paraglider.
Because hang gliders have an airframe, the shape of the airfoil does not suddenly distort in turbulence and initiate a turn in the total absence of the pilot's input.
Furthermore, because paragliders have little pitch control compared to hang gliders, it takes much longer to recover from an out-of-control situation.
You can't crank and bank to get out of trouble. Think about that.
I have said for many years that while hang glider pilots can kill themselves by pilot error, but paragliders suddenly kill their pilots when least expected.
It's a no-brainer - and it explains why paraglider pilots think paragliders are great substitutes for real aircraft.

Because paragliging offers little in the way of protection to the participant other than a ridiculous buttbag sometimes helpful in falls below 3 meters, it may prove helpful for budding soaring parachutists to practice the sport of parkuor before stepping up to paragliding.



After a few weeks of parkour, the neophyte soaring parachutist is ready for the joys of free-falling to the ground from even greater heights, and the opportunity to shatter major bones like the femur without hardly any effort at all. Cumulative brain injuries (see below) are helpful in understanding concepts like "where am I?" and rationalizing such things as "the air is soft," or making decisions like "let's join the USHPA and go speed-riding with the hang glider pilot dudes," easier if not automatic.

Potential complications of concussion include:

Epilepsy. People who have had a concussion double their risk of developing epilepsy within the first five years after the injury.

Cumulative effects of multiple brain injuries. Evidence exists indicating that people who have had multiple concussive brain injuries over the course of their lives may acquire lasting, and even progressive, impairment that limits their ability to function.

Postconcussion syndrome. Some people begin having postconcussion symptoms — such as headaches, dizziness and thinking difficulties — a few days after a concussion. Symptoms may continue for weeks to a few months after a concussion.

Post-traumatic headaches. Some people experience headaches within a week to a few months after a brain injury.

Post-traumatic vertigo. Some people experience a sense of spinning or dizziness for days, week or months after a brain injury.

Second impact syndrome. Experiencing a second concussion before signs and symptoms of a first concussion have resolved may result in rapid and usually fatal brain swelling.

After a concussion, the levels of brain chemicals are altered. It usually takes about a week for these levels to stabilize again. However, recovery time is variable, and it's important for athletes never to return to sports while they're still experiencing signs and symptoms of concussion.
