Okay, if PG is a $500MM/yr industry and half that amount represents sales of new paragliders, and if a new paraglider is sold for an average price of $3,200, then 78,125 new paragliders are sold each year.
If you fly a paraglider for three years, then buy a new one, 312,500 people will have paragliders less than four years old.
So how many people are flying paragliders more than four years old?
I bet Jesse would know!

I thought it interesting that it actually mentioned that the reserve parachutes had to be designed to open quickly since most deployments are near the ground. :o

The paraglider must enter the Paraglider Dead Mans Curve at least twice every flight: at takeoff and landing. Soaring parachutists also often choose to ignore the risk and fly within the PDMC in search of lift, where the likelihood of encountering normal ground turbulence, which can cause the canopy to collapse below effective emergency reserve height, is greatest. Most of the thousands of serious injuries and 1,576 paragliding deaths that I am presently aware of were a result of canopy collapse within the PDMC.

There is no hitting the power and climbing, if they get too low over dangerous terrain. So be it.

It is so bad right now that all the speed-riding web sites with fatality lists that I can find are nine months out of date.
After decades of struggle to make hang gliding safer and more palatable to the public, hang glider pilots should reconsider their participation in any organization that embraces such suicidal idiocy. Inviting in all these other forms of flight dilutes the focus on safety we need for hang gliding. This has obviously deteriorated in recent years. The only way to correct this is to abandon the atrocity which the USGHA has mutated into and form a new national organization devoted only to recreational hang gliding.

USHPA make the case that speed flying is like hang gliding:

In case you haven’t seen speed flyers at your local hill yet and have somehow missed all the fast and furious speed flying videos all over the internet, let me give you a brief explanation. Speed flying is a relatively new foot-launched flying sport that involves the use of small, fast ram-air canopies to glide and even soar. Like most evolutionary developments in hang gliding, this one is a fusion of new and old ideas. To me, it seems like speed flying uses the latest paraglider technology to accomplish some of hang gliding’s earliest ground-skimming goals. Interestingly, speed flying also has roots in a skydiving discipline known as “ground-launching.” Much as the name implies, ground-launching is the sport of foot-launching skydiving canopies and then swooping down a hillside at high speed. Speed flying also has a lot in common with “speed riding,” which is a winter sport that combines skiing with a small ram-air canopy and involves repeated transitions from skiing to gliding as you carve down the mountain.
