PARA FORCES Training at Crestline California?

North Korean special forces have been training to invade South Korea with paragliders,
according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency.

The drills were conducted in mid-September at a training site with a building modeled after the South Korea-US Combined Forces Command in Seoul, Yonhap reported.

Special forces from North Korea's navy, air force, 11th army corps, and sniper brigade participated, according to Newsweek.

Paragliders can fly below radar and can also be folded down and transported easily.

“A paraglider flies at a low altitude without making a sound. It could be useful for making a surprise attack, like a drone," a South Korean defense official told Yonhap.

"I believe that North Korean special forces are adopting amazing methods of infiltration with limited resources," the official said.

The US and South Korea, in response, conducted their own short-range air-defense drills, known as SHORAD, in late September to thwart "low altitude cruise missiles, unmanned aerial systems and air breathing threats," Newsweek reported, citing a US Army press release.

This may be the biggest break we've had in understanding what's been going on at Torrey.

National Defense issues can be used to put a scare in local politicians like Barbara Bry and Sherri Lightner. They're in the role played by Jamie Lee Curtis in "True Lies". But Bob Filner spent decades in Washington. So he wasn't hoodwinked by any "Shhhhh ... it's a top secret operation" talk that could be used to silence the local yokels.

The easiest way to hide corruption is to wrap it in the cloak of "national security". That bypasses almost all of the checks and balances built into our government. Jebb's background on the police force and his position at Torrey Pines on 9/11/2001 put him in an ideal position to capitalize on fears of terrorism to protect his little kingdom at Torrey.

Of all the conspiracy theories I've heard to explain the inexplicable at Torrey, this one fits the best.

Sorry to have interrupted this topic with my previous comment, but Eagle's post is a huge missing piece in our local puzzle.

Your work, Rick, has been monumental. It doesn't surprise me that the paragliding interests have done everything they could to shut you down. Thanks for persevering.

I just went to the Crestline Facebook page linked in Eagle's post. All I found was a member who posted about a news article from Business Insider magazine about N Korean military training with paragliders. Rick M found the same story in Newsweek a few days ago (which included an erroneous picture of a hang glider).

There's nothing I could find in the Business Insider article about N Koreans training at Crestline. I also couldn't find any video via the video link. So it seems that Eagle's headline that "PARA FORCES Training at Crestline California" is not actually so.

It also doesn't make much sense that US immigration officials would allow a (large?) group of N Koreans composed of four sections of their military into our country so they might train - at Crestline, CA - to attack S Korea. Particularly since they built a mock S Korean military facility to attack during this training. I expect that that kind of thing would show up on national news.

Eagle, have you been looking at the tabloid mag.s overly much while on line for supermarket check out? :problem: Just wondering. ;) . . .

Your right , to show the point .... I added the 1st line
PARA FORCES Training at Crestline California ?
AND
My search could not find empirical proof that this that this is going on...

The video link was a typo meant to disclose this article, posted within the comments :
http://www.kurdistan24.net/en/news/c05b ... 2901f630db
and http://www.businessinsider.com/north-ko ... er-2017-10

Plenty of shop talk at Torrey Pines Gliderport
Do you really think they will post proof, just hand it to you or make it accessible ?
Ha HA Ha , as the truth is bashed on the web site's article
We know, so called Black-Op, Military and Law enforcement,
are involved in our sport, flying both recreational and organized training throughout all sites,
and the article's shown already prove that much.

But your right ,... as it stands now ...
It's just normal training that has been going on in the public sector ~

I am not against any training of any kind, lets be clear on this
I'm against there control of the sport and being force by contract to pay them.

At Eagle's request, I've added a question mark and a blank line after his title. Thanks for the help in making this clearer Wingspan.

I believe the main point of Eagle's post is that there is likely government involvement in paragliding. I think that has to be true. If it weren't, I'd be asking "Why not?!?".

I personally don't see any problem with that kind of activity as long as it's not being used as a license to abuse the public. Unfortunately, I think that's exactly what's happening at Torrey.

Hi Eagle,

I didn't mean to sound overly critical.

One thing I'm pretty certain of is that many governments have military outfits trained (and/or training) in the use of hang gliders and paragliders - including the powered version of each. Whether any such unit will ever see action is . . . "up in the air".

If N Korean soldiers end up doing something nasty to S Korea using PGs then the world will have a more negative view of PGs. Favoring hang gliders, even I would rather not have that kind of bad press be what negatively defines PGs. People shouldn't be killed by soldiers in either Paragliders or hang gliders. I think your average recreational participant of each sport would agree to that.

But this (sub)topic definitely seems to belong under the heading "Other Dangerous Sport News"

Night of the Hang-Gliders: November 25, 1987
http://www.isracast.com/article.aspx?ID=1009
Four terrorists were sent on a suicide mission to fly 80 kilometers on motorized hang-gliders into an IDF army base next to the city of Kiryat-Shemonah. One of the attackers reached his target, killing 6 IDF soldiers.
On November 25, 1987 the "Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine - General Command", headed by Palestinian terrorist Ahmed Jibril, launched Operation Kibya (also known as the Night of the Hang-gliders), in which four terrorists were sent to fly 80 kilometers on motorized hang-gliders across the Lebanon-Israel border to Israeli northern city of Kiryat Shemonah. The terrorists were fed with sugar, protein and even amphetamines to provide a necessary surge of energy on their suicidal strike, in which their gear was also booby-trapped in order to create additional casualties even after they would be killed.
While three of the attackers failed to reach their target, the fourth one, Khaled Acker, managed to infiltrate a nearby IDF camp slaying six soldiers and wounding seven before being killed himself. The spectacular attack made a terror icon of Jibril and inspired the first intifada, a period of intense violence by Palestinians against Israel.

Posted text: “Today is the 30th anniversary of the gliders operation (i.e., terrorist attack, 6 murdered) that was carried out by self-sacrificing fighters Khaled Akar from Syria and Mayloud Bin Najeh Nouma from Tunisia. Mayloud’s hang glider landed in the occupied strip in southern Lebanon (i.e., security zone), and he clashed with the occupation before he died as a Martyr (Shahid). This was while Khaled landed at the ‘Gibor’ [Israeli army] camp in northern occupied Palestine, killed 6 soldiers of a Golani unit and wounded 20 others (sic., 7) before he died as a Martyr.
Glory to the Martyrs”

----------------------------
The Palestinian sport of flying motorized hang gliders to hunt Israeli soldiers is recognized as the world's deadliest aviation pastime - with a 100-percent fatality rate.
Now, I used to have a friend, who shall go unnamed, who occasionally would jump from 30,000 feet or more with his black ops unit using ram-air rectangular parachutes over international or friendly airspace and glide up to 50 miles into enemy territory. Seoul is 35 miles from the North Korean border. Their heavy equipment and munitions would be suspended below them as they landed and hit the ground first, allowing for a gentler landing.
If you are going to attempt to make a case for a powered paraglider attack, it would have to have an advantage over high altitude troop drops. The weight of the engine or trike would reduce the cargo weight. There is certainly no advantage there over an air drop.
PPGs are noisy with one engine required per attacker. Parachute drops are massive and silent with only one aircraft required. When you shut off the engine of a PPG, you descend at a worse glide than a rectangular parachute. The ceiling of a heavily-loaded PPG is way below air drop altitude. Even if you were going to drop the engine and glide, you'd make a lot of noise getting to the detachment point. PPGs are unreliable. It makes more sense just to jump out of an airplane.
Of course, any airplane climbing to 30,000 feet would be shot down after the start of hostilities, so they would have to be up there at the moment hostilities are declared, ready to jump. This just doesn't make sense to me. I understand they have underground tunnels ready to open up into SK territory on command. That makes more sense. Not that it would end well...
