Darwin failed.
Two of the stupidest people I've ever seen will live on to reproduce.

Talking about reproduction...
The scariest thing in the video was the paragliders reproducing.
First there was one.
Then there were two.
Terrifying...
Shades of grey goo...

We are doomed.

But then again, . . . We can still hope.

Maybe the grey goo . . . won't take! :eh:

Imagine such a self-replicating paraglider floating in the sky, making copies of itself…

Image

The first paraglider produces a copy in one thousand seconds, the two paragliders then make two more in the next thousand seconds, the four make another four, and the eight build another eight. At the end of ten hours, there are not thirty-six new paragliders, but over 68 billion. In less than a day, they would outweigh Jupiter; in another four hours, they would exceed the mass of the Sun and all the planets combined; only ten minutes later, they would exceed the mass of the entire universe.

Guess what's under the tarp?
If you guessed Karsten, you win a nearly new paraglider and harness in perfect condition!

"Today the accidents that occur are the fault of the pilot,
because [paragliders] are perfect aircraft."

Edelrid CEO Carsten von Birckhahn dies in accident
The 49-year-old CEO of Edelrid was much-loved in the outdoor industry for his "innovative drive, his tireless commitment, his experience and great love for mountain sports," the company wrote in a statement about his death.

No. This Karsten got killed last week.

It's hard to keep up with so many paragliders killing themselves.
They think paragliders are "perfect aircraft" and therefore believe that every fatality is pilot error.
By believing in this fantasy, there is no way they can stop the slaughter which took off in 2003 and continues to this day without let-up.
They've racked up 95 fatalities this year, by my incomplete count, and it's only October.
Remember how bad we thought hang gliding was in the bad old days before reflex, with hundreds of thousands participating in the craze worldwide?
It was never as bad as today's paragliding slaughter, which continues year upon year without any improvement at all.
Why? Because there is a Universal Paraglider Design Flaw.
It's a dangerous design.
It collapses in turbulence, a normal part of the atmosphere.
If you are going to build an aircraft, it has to be designed to survive turbulence.
"Otherwise, they're only toys," to quote Don Partridge who brought the hang gliders to the Owens Valley in the late 1970s to prove themselves.
Paragliders are toys. They have not proven themselves as worthy aircraft.
The people who die on them have the enthusiasm and analytic thinking skills of children.
This has become completely obvious to me.
At first I was distraught.
But now Darwin comforts me.
It's a fad.
Sooner or later, they'll exhaust the gene pool and run out of idiots.

Back in the late '80s there was a hang glider pilot in Ellenville, NY who shouldn't have been a hang glider pilot. While he LOVED hang gliding, he wasn't that good at it. And there's a connection here with collapsible canopies. Since it's easier to begin to learn how to fly paragliders, a student - who may not have the above average skills required to be an aviator - is easily convinced that they have "what it takes".

Sadly, as many of us here understand, it's harder (or impossible) to master a papraglider (as opposed to mastering the flight characteristics of a hang glider). So the naive (i.e. idiot) paragliding enthusiast is quickly (and often purposefully) lulled into the "this is the perfect aircraft" way of thinking. Then, some time later, typical atmospheric turbulence deflates their canopy and down they come - hurt or killed by the impact.

Since human beings evolved mainly in a 2D world*, as a majority, we are not necessarily skilled at large scale 3D movement. However a BIG number of human beings like to dream about flying. And since a few exceptional people began leading us into the air over 100 years ago, those who dream about flying began to feel that they may actually be able to LEARN to fly.

Now you don't have to be brilliant to fly, but at least smart with an advanced sense of movement in 3 dimensions. You can't simply wish yourself into being a good aviator.

But regarding collapsible canopies, it's been made a lot easier for someone not truly suited to being an aviator to "wish" themselves into the sky. It must be noted that an understanding of basic aerodynamic principles is also required for aviator. This is where the marketing and "teaching" of paragliding require "idiots" as the inductees. Collapsible canopy students can't figure out why other aircraft (besides blips) have solid air frames. They can't figure out that they are being taught to fly the most complex form of parachute, which, for that reason, is more likely to suffer a failure in air. These students can't figure out that they are typically taught how to fly in thermals (i.e. atmospheric turbulence) and that turbulence can cause a PG to become a collapsed canopy dropping them to their death.

I would guess that skilled and capable aviators (not just flight dreamers) should be placed to the right of the mid point on the bell curve of of human intelligence. Unfortunately, that leaves a very large population of "flight dreamers" available to the collapsible canopy marketeers. These are the people who love the idea of flying, but probably shouldn't be doing it. The mere fact that they can be convinced that paragliders are safe (even safer than hang gliders? :lolno: ) means they lack the critical intellectual skills required to be capable aviators. One could easily determine that the collapsible canopy marketeers "live" on customers who may be described as "suckers" and/or "idiots".

Like the fellow who wasn't that good of a hang glider pilot back in Ellenville, many collapsible canopy occupants LOVE the idea of flying. It's the money grubbing marketeers who manipulate the dream of flying into wads of cash in their pockets and bank accounts. While doing so these marketeers send the naive, ignorant and uninformed to suffer significant injury, or to die.

Unlike hang gliding, paragliding presents one with three opportunities to experience freefall.

During take off.
During flight.
During landing approach.

Paragliding        October 16, 2017

It's happened again, for at least the second time serious enough to make the news. A gust front over Phewa Lake in Pokahara, Nepal, has caught paragliders in the air and blown them into the lake. The first time it was eleven competitors during a Paragliding World Cup elimination event but this time it was a dozen commercial joyriders and their tourist clients. Miraculously, no one drowned, but like the other time I know about, it was close and there was no rescue made by the authorities.

"Yes I called the police they eventually arrived one hour after I put the first call in," said Amanda Handscombe. "The storm was over and the locals were the ones who helped. The police number a 100 number cut me off twice . And then I tried the tourist Pokhara police number they were more interested in my name and number than putting together a rescue team. Which I told them get out onto the lake people were drowning. I watched a boat full of about 6 people try to rescue the one paraglider who was in desperate trouble ... Their boat sank in front of my eyes that was to the left of Arborealis the restaurant. Truly shocked by the police attitude to me they are supposed to comprehend the English language which is the language of most tourists. I was cut off 4 times on the 5 th attempt of trying to make myself understood I cut them off as it was unbelievably pointless persuing a person that didn't speak English or comprehend it."

"A point to make," she added, "at 8 am even I could see the weather was going to be stormy and rain was in the air. What were these paragliding companies doing sending tourist up there. One hour before the storm hit the clouds has darkened and the wind was picking up. Money is more important than people's lives. Shocked by what I saw and what happened today."

I wrote on March 1, 2016:
Mark my words, one of these days we'll see a dozen or more soaring parachutists killed in a sudden wind event.
There won't be enough helicopters to collect the bodies.
Wind events are very common atmospheric phenomena.
I have encountered them on several occasions in very fast hang gliders, outrun them and landed safely in front of them.
