Even in flatland, I'd like to have people know first flight from foot launch solo, if only a few feet off the ground. It is possible. Tandem tow as first...(?)...something deep is lost.
"License"? Rating? Site-controlled might form their own "license" within their property lines for the ground. State licenses? National licenses? Variations exist. Ratings are different from licenses. Once in the USA air: no license even if flying over a private or public property. No rating and no license protects one from natural law; be prepared: practice fundamentals; stay prepared.

Agreed. It's great to experience other forms of instruction, but there is something about running one's own self into the air that can't be replaced by any other form.

The wording on that was intentional. Hang glider pilots know the sport uses the vernacular "ratings" but the uninitiated presume it's like general aviation and you need a "license" to fly. Therefore, I use the term "license" at the start, since that is what the average viewer is expecting to hear, then correct the terminology to "rating" so the audience grasps what the proper wording should be.
