Oh by the way Sam.... I have a pristine topless [ magenta & teal ] WW Fusion 150.
It's my fifth topless wing and this is my sixth Falcon by the way.

Well then now-------it seems as though most everyone will slow down to looky-loo at a train wreck in progress. And of course stay well clear of the tracks themselves/ourselves during the event. But let’s move along now folks.

My physics teacher, Mr. Anderson, had a unique style of teaching.
Ridicule, shame, embarrassment, mortification, indignity, degradation were just a few of the educational tools that he would employ daily. Other days when he was angry he would turn down right nasty.

He taught at a college level but we were in our senior year of high school.
To his credit, if judging by my presents, he had a class of slow learners.

The level of joy entering his class room was equal to a one way trip to the gas chamber.
Speaking of things equal, to this day, I can recite that a mole is equal to 6.0221415×10²³ and also tell you what that means and still have absolutely no clue as to what I’m talking about.
In retirement now I don’t recall any time during my working life that I had any need for that equation.
Back then I confessed to my classmates that I had no clue as to what Mr. Anderson was talking about. To my surprise they admitted that they were in the same boat with me.
The greatest lesson I left Mr. Anderson’s class with was, when thirty people are listening with an open mind and nothing is sinking in it’s not your fault. It is the instructors fault. Some people may know a lot but lack the talent to teach or use the wrong style of getting their point across. That doesn’t mean that their knowledge is flawed but the principal should have fired Mr. Anderson.

Thanks to Bob for all the help today.

I've moved some comments posted here to the Training Manual Comments topic. To retain the history of the discussion in its original context, I've copied them into my post below. Please post any new comments about the Training Manual in the Training Manual Comments topic.

Here are the original posts that have been moved to the Training Manual Comments topic:

billcummings wrote:So how come there is no reply to a post in the training manual section? :wtf: :?

terryJm wrote:Very astute observation Bill, and if Bob will place 'Post a reply' icon in the 'Training Manual' topic, I'd like to add a few things that have helped the S.W. Texas chapter. Also several of my own posts in Hang gliding General, as well as 'Forming the Hawks' could be transferded into the 'manual' topic, but only after editing out the objectional TROLL comments! I hope you are watching Bob, or I've wasted another 15min. Thanks again, Terry

Hi Bill and Terry,

I've limited that forum to just the people who want to sincerely work on building a good training manual so we don't get derailed. If either of you guys would like to participate, you'd be welcome ... as well as most other members of the forum. Are either of you interested? Just post your interest or send me a PM and I'll be happy to add you to the writing/contributing "staff".

To amplify my thinking, the work that will take place on that topic isn't best suited to a forum. It's more suited to some kind of collaboration software between people who want to work toward that common goal. But since a forum is the only "groupware" that we've got right now, I'll adapt it to that purpose. When all you've got is a hammer ... everything looks like a nail.

So that's why the forum is readable to everyone, but will only be writable by the group that's going to actually write the manual.

Is everyone OK with that?

P.S. Bill, I've been working on your pilot profile and it's coming along great. I'll be sending you a preview soon, and I apologize (publicly) that it's taken me so long.

billcummings wrote:I was thinking that I could share some pointers about water towing. Maybe they could be of use in the training manual.

Maybe the person actually typing up the training manual might see something worth passing along to pilots that haven’t yet had the opportunity to blunder down the wrong path yet like I had years ago.

Things like: Once a glider has upset in the lake and is only showing it’s floats above the surface there is only one way to right the glider when a wind is blowing.

Another thing: While waiting for the boat to return to the glider after it has landed in the lake, and while being blown backwards, the pilot must move him/herself toward the low wing to raise it. Sounds just backwards or like I just made a typo doesn’t it? But there is a good reason for this that once explained will (hopefully) make sense.

If you want to reply to any of these comments, please post in that topic.

Let's keep this topic for posting an initial "Hi" to the US Hawks as new members join, and for our members to greet them with a welcoming reply. Thanks.

Anyone out there who hails from Oregon, give me a reply. I am back into flying after a long time off. Currently fly an old original Comet 165. I have a new U2 but do not have the confidence in landing yet to transition to it. Its' only air time to date was at Funston and Ed Levin in the Bay area. I live in Dallas (15 minutes toward the coast from Salem) and fly the local area making it as far as Lake View and Dog Mountain. Always looking to share road trips to more distant sites like Funston or Point Of The Mountain.

I think by far the best tutorial on landing a HG is over on the OZ Report by Jim Rooney. His Trim + one (second) is the cat's meow for landing a HG.
In short --hold on lots of speed on final, bend your knees a little, let your toes tickle the grass, maintain your same altitude by letting the control bar pull out as it seeks trim speed as your glider slows down, when the control frame no longer pulls forward against your hands--that is trim speed.
Wait one more second and then flare like you mean it.
It works well.
PS Point of the Mountain is no longer good on the south side unless it is too windy for PG'ers.
There is now a whole town on the north bench where back in the 70's there was not one house. There is room to fly on the north side in light wind days. But light wind days on the south side ---you will not be happy.
