The more I look at them, the more I think they were braking devices. Lower the nose with the elevator and generate braking force.

The keel stinger as a flexing device and perhaps landing shock absorber may have been explored carefully; I do not have references yet.

But the patents have special parachute-landing boots that are for taking up landing shocks, etc.
The idea of high flare and drop into tripodal shock-aborbing legs (keel could be one leg) might be explored for niche HG purposes.
I will keep a lookout for such Safe-Splat devices.
