In the May-June issue of Ryan Reporter, 1962 on its page 20
is an artist's large drawing of many flexible wing applications.
One small corner of the drawing is the following clip:

It looks like Ryan Aeronautical in early 1963 or earlier had some Safe-Splat going on their Fleep testing.
Notice the A-frame cable-stayed; note the broad Safe-Splat bottom skid should the wheels collapse, or something, not sure yet.

Motivation for Safe-Splat mitation

Ellen D. has given hang gliding an inequitable unfair hit against the hang gliding industry using her industrial clout. Redress might be in the offing.
Perhaps winning a class-action lawsuit against her show could be used in Safe-Splat research or HG training or a wheel-skid fund.

I am guessing the pilot could also place his feet on those two Safe-Splat devices.

The very cable-stayed triangle control frame in hang glider of battened flexible wing with pilot hung from keel was already known in hang gliding and powered aircraft by the time this book was written. The powered aircraft that would move the pilot up and relegated the triangle control frame to be undercarriage landing and takeoff gear only would become one of the most ubiquitous frame parts in aviation. A seated suprone position ( inside the bar ) with tricycle gear would be
a very safe way to land if a foot landing is to be abandoned. I have always
wondered why we don't do a bungee launch with wheels at sites that would
allow it?
