The photo you refer to was taken in the backyard of Jim's first home in LA located in the Valley (Tarzana).
I think the shot was taken before the Dockweiler flight. The house was built in the 50ies during the "Red Scare" and featured a full sized underground bomb shelter. When I was a child I told "Uncle Jim" that if a bomb ever fell the the nearby pool would flood the shelter and you'd drown. Of course we never had to test that theory.
All the best Jim

You were pretty observant for a child. I don't know of too many adults who would have thought about that!!

Every human at every point in history has an opportunity to choose courage over cowardice. Look around and you will find that opportunity in your own time.

6051,
Yes, sharp mechanical insight you had!
 Because Palmer and your uncle seem to be the seeding pioneering renaissance recreation-sport foot-launch hang gliding persons using the NASA-spread four-boom technology,
the site of that 1962 home may become a gem in the history of hang gliding! Thanks, Surtees. God meant for humans to fly, that is one reason God gave us Jim, a distinct helper in that ongoing adventure. :?: :?:

 It just came to be noted by Ashley that she has found a photo of Jim flying. Determining the date and craft and place might take some determined detective work.
And she also noted the presence of a hang glider in Jim's possession; same for that: will it prove to be the 1962 ship or something else? :?: :?:

Soon,
JoeF

Elsie Holmes Hobson
knew about her husband's hang gliding. Elsie Holmes Hobson passed away over a decade ago.

An April 28, 2013, comment posted in
https://www.facebook.com/CoffeeDogProductions
by a relative Ed Cortright posted a significant paragraph, including some comments about Jim Hobson and Elsie.
Clipping: "He will always be a hero in my life as the example of a creative adult who could see the world through the eyes of an adventurous child."

I hope Ed will tell more.

Also at
https://www.facebook.com/CoffeeDogProductions is the telling April 26, 2013, post from CoffeeDogProductions. The post was just before Jim's passing on the same day.

Elsie Holmes Hobson
knew of Jim's hang gliding.
Her gravestone in Mississippi

Main source has some details:

Surtees James confirmed the stone regards Elsie who knew of her husband's hang gliding.

Ed Cortright: "She and my Mom grew up in a little town named Yazoo City, MS. When she and her husband Jim would return to MS for there annual visit ..."
Ed Cortright of the following photo that shows Elsie in a play: "my aunt Elsie"

Jim Hobson had in his collection
Book II of Boy Mechanic.
We in our forum have a topic on Book I, which see. And just because Jim had Book II, does not rule out whether or not speculatively he had seen Book I or further editions.
But to respect that he had Book II, we follow that fact and have a look in Book II, as it was important enough for Jim to present me with the fact of his Book II roots, in part.

So, here is a link that gives access to Book II in several formats, your choice.

What was in Book II ????? :?: :?: :?: Invited: Clips and speculation over what might have caught Jim's eye in that book.

Did Jim see the top drawing that has a tailed monoplane hang glider?

Did he review the main article Tandem Monoplane hang glider (echo of Montgomery in 1800s late) ?
