This group is for those pilots who enjoy foot launch soaring flights and flying cross country on the best ridge around. Located near Mechanicsburg, VA. Big Walker is a 100 mile ridge and the premire xc site for hang glider and paraglider flyers. The LZ and launch is owned by Jim Bogle. The LZ has electricity, a firepit, plenty of camping room on a short mowed grass area where we break down our wings. There are two porta johns, free camp'n area, free hot showers from a propane fired unit, three picnic tables and water too. There are 2 windsocks and two wind flags in the primary LZ. Most landings are up hill in all wind directions & we have two places with flat areas also. We now have a 5'X 12' trailer to haul 10+ hang gliders on double decker padded racks with PG'n gear in the bed. Pilots ride in the back of the truck for $5 a day if the numbers exceed six pilots or two vehicles up top
The road from LZ to launch is paved with a nice gravel based 2 wheel drive 1/4 mile drive to a wind free setup beside the steep slope takeoff. Site records at 10K climbs and 95+ miles over the back. Requirements for pilots:
(1) Current USHPA Membership.
(2) Helmet & chute.
(3) H3 / P3 or higher ratings. If you are a H2 or P2, we will supervise you with a Big Walker site mentor. We also have a HG observer to help you with your ratings.
We have an annual SOAR BIG WALKER XC contest that's free to all dues paying SOAR BIG WALKER members.
Just land as far away as possible from the primary LZ to qualify. Club dues are $100 a year.
All proceeds go towards 2014 cost for a hired crew for launch clearing, camp'n area mowing fuel cost, water,
power, & propane cost etc.
