Hello everyone,

I just wanted to introduce myself my name is Jonathan Yonetani, I'm a new student to hangliding, despite that fact I do my research and I'm confident that this is the right direction for this sport. I look forward to meeting, sharing ideas and getting things done in order to build this association.

Welcome jaybird78!!!!

                    :)

It was great talking to you on the phone today. Please feel free to call me any time about your thoughts on hang gliding and the US Hawks. If I can help you in any way, I'll do my best.

Please feel free to browse around the forum and ask questions about anything you don't understand. A while back some of us started working on an on-line training manual for new students, but we haven't gotten very far. Maybe your questions will help push that effort.

Mostly, remember what I said on the phone. This is a great sport, but it is aviation, and it can be dangerous if you don't get good training which leads to good skills. So do your best to get connected with good people who can help mentor you along. Checking into your local club is a good place to get started.

I look forward to lots of good discussions during your training, but always ... Fly Safe!!

Bob

Hello Jonathan!!!

Thanks for posting a link to that video!

Can I suggest starting a blog to keep us all posted on your progress?

On the "Board Index" page, there's a link titled "Blog Forum". All topics started in that forum are considered as "blogs". When you start a topic in the Blog Forum, your first post should tell a little about the purpose of the blog and let people know whether you welcome their comments or not.

In your case, I think your purpose would be to document your training progress and log your flights. Whether you'd like other people to comment (or not) is up to you.

Also, you can embed YouTube videos directly in the forum like this:

Here's what you type into your post to get that to happen:

Welcome again to the forum, and I hope to follow your progress!!!

Great response Bob, if we expect change to occur we all need to do our part in order to make it happen. With that being said, what are we doing to make this association grow? Is there a plan?

Great questions Jonathan!!

There are lots of directions we can go to grow the US Hawks. It all depends on how each of us wants to spend their time and energy. One of my main focuses has been on recruiting new Chapters. A recent example was my trip to New Mexico last month to answer questions of the RGSA when they were considering joining us. Bill and Sam have been a huge help in that regard. So if you know of any Chapters (or would like to start one in your area) that would be a big step.

There's another big step that someone (a brave someone) could take. One of the largest hang gliding web sites is hanggliding.org. The operator of that site is a fellow named Jack Axaopoulos. Jack makes money from the ads on his site, and he is determined to keep any other site from out-growing his site (I believe that's why he killed the HGAA). In fact, he's actually set up his web site (hanggliding.org) to automatically change the links that people post so that there are no links (absolutely zero) from his site to the US Hawks. If you find that hard to believe, go there and post a comment like:

Hello Hang Gliding Pilots,

I just want to let everyone know that there's a new hang gliding association getting started at:

    ushawks.org

Check it out.

That's a pretty innocent post. But when you check your post, you'll find that his software has automatically changed the link from "ushawks.org" to something else (the last time I checked, he was changing them to "loserville.org"). Jack is pretty smart about the web, and he knows that Google ranks sites based on who links to them. By ensuring that there are ZERO links from hanggliding.org to ushawks.org, he's ensuring that our site is ranked somewhere down around page 10 when searching Google for the phrase "hang gliding".

Now if you do post a link to US Hawks (on hanggliding.org), and find that it gets changed, you could start a discussion about it. My guess is that Jack will ban you from his forum at that time. He uses the fear of being banned to keep people from speaking out. So that's a risk that you'd have to accept if you wanted to spread the word about the US Hawks on his forum.

Eventually, I believe more and more people will begin to understand what's going on ... one pilot and club at a time. And eventually, I think some of them will challenge Jack for banning people for daring to even mention the US Hawks. That's when we'll start to get more exposure which will really help us grow. Until then, I'm just spreading the word ... one pilot and one club at a time. :)

I am a network marketer, I have experience promoting sites, as far as ranking goes that falls on the way the site is set up. I recommended a revamping of current site. One of my businesses is web hosting, which is free. The task I can start with is compiling a list of potential back links and help with designing.g site and SEO.

Jaybird78,
I left the hgdotorg when I saw a post altered without permission. At the time I left none of my posts had been altered but there was the possibility that it could easily happen if I were to post anything not to the moderator’s liking.

I’ve been here at the US Hawks for more than two years and I can say that the moderator here (Bob K.) is long suffering when it comes to people abusing him.

HERE LET ME PROVE IT TO YOU:

Bob is a numb scull.
His elevator doesn’t go to the top floor.
He is two cards short of a full deck.
He doesn’t know if he is on foot or on horseback.
You can tell Bob something but you can’t tell him much!
Bob is two steps short of the landing.
When Bob’s mouth is in gear his brain isn’t engaged.
