Oooops.

Yes, of course, cross bar above (which, obviously, brought the leading edge down by two inches or so). Thanks for the correction, Bill.

At the risk of another story about the same guy (again, remaining nameless). I didn't witness this incident, but heard about it from a couple of flying mates who were there.

Nameless Guy was competing in a competition, when he decided that he needed to out-lift the other pilots. He'd heard that more camber improves lift, so in front of everybody on launch, as he was setting up his glider, he made the desired camber adjustment by grabbing all of his battens in a single handful and BENDING THEM OVER HIS KNEE!

I s'pose this is getting off the topic of hang straps, so maybe we should start another thread called "Hoary Old-Fart Shock Stories From Back-In-The-Day"! I'm sure everyone has a bunch of them. :)

:srofl:

In addition to our club forums, we also have a "blog forum" section where pilots can start their own topics and set their own rules. In a sense, the Blog Forum is like your own personal club forum where you set the rules up front and let me know how you want them enforced. So you can set up a Blog topic where you invite others to post or not.

The "default" tends to be that if a blog topic doesn't explicitly invite others to post, then it's polite to either not post or send a PM message to the owner if you want to post.

Thanks Bob.

As I think others have also said, I think this forum is pretty impressive. Although smaller than the davis.com and sg.org, it's well organized, well administered, and the level of discussion seems somewhat 'higher' (for want of a better word). But the most refreshing thing is just the courtesy and respect that I see here. Congratulations on creating something good.

AirNut,

Oh yeah! US Hawks Hang Gliding Assn

Have you been reading the FAA Fundamentals of Instruction?

While studying the FOI for my HG instructor check, I really liked one of the acronyms. There were many.

The acronym was HOT. It stood for Higher Order of Thinking. Oh yeah, drink the coolaid. :srofl:  :srofl:

It's the people that make the forum. I give my thanks to every person who comes here to share their love of the sport and their respect for others who do as well.

We value free speech here. But we also value civility. If I see something that looks like it might escalate into something ugly, I often pick up the phone and call the pilots involved to try to mediate. In most cases, it's a small misunderstanding that's gotten out of control, so a nice conversation can often smooth things out.

Right now I can do that myself because I know most of the people on this forum. As the site grows, I think it will be good to have a network of people who volunteer to perform that role for each other. I want this site to belong to all of us. I want each of us to feel like owners and stake-holders. That's what will make it so much better than the other forums ... and so much better than USHPA.

Well, that's my dream. It's been very slow in materializing, but we've used that time to bring together some very good people. We're reaching the point where I'd like to start talking about some sort of governing body. I'd like to accomplish that some time in 2015.

Thanks again for the nice words, and I'll end where I started. It's the people who make this forum, and my deepest thanks goes to all of them!!
