SW Texas HG Forum Styles

The US Hawks forum can use different styles for different subforums. I'm still trying to decide which styles to use for which kinds of subforums, but I'm pretty sure that I'd like each Chapter to have their own distinctive style so people visiting will know when they've moved from one domain to the next.

Right now the SW Texas Hang Gliders is using the default style (prosilver), but you can see more styles at the styles demo page: http://www.phpbb.com/styles/demo/3.0/. If you go to that site, you'll see a drop down box in the upper right corner that says "Select style" in front of it, and it normally starts with "prosilver". You can click on that drop down box to select another style to see what it looks like. I generally like styles that scale with the browser window as its size changes. Otherwise, with a fixed-width style, it might appear too big on some people's screens and too small on others. You can test this by resizing your own browser window and seeing if the width of the forum itself changes as the window size changes.

There are dozens (if not hundreds) of styles that people have developed, and there are new ones coming along all the time. It takes a little work for me to install each one, and a little more work to add your club's custom logo, so I don't want to do it too often. But if you see something that you really like, please let me know and I'll get to work on it.

Hey Sam,

I couldn't resist making up a logo for your club ...

I hope you don't mind. I just needed something as a place holder, and you can change it any time.

Hi Bob,

Can you help me create a new club/forum logo, similar to this. This needs an update :D

Thanks,
Sam

Sure Sam!!!

If you can give me a list of the locations of flights, I'll see what I can do.

The locations could be precise latitude and longitude or just city names. Or even if you have a blow up of the one you posted that might work also.

This sounds like a fun project, and I'm looking forward to any help I can give.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for the email of the image. Here are the records with cities that I pulled from the image. Are there others that you can add? Just list them here in the forum. Thanks.

Also, I'm trying to think up a creative way to show something this detailed in a logo. I'm currently stumped, so any suggestions are welcome!!

I guess we could stretch it across the top of the screen like we have with the Rio Grande Soaring Association:

Maybe something like this:

What do you think? Am I getting warm yet?

Thanks Bob,

That's looking real good

The update should include the World Flex Wing record, Dustin Martin, Zapata to Lubbock, 475mi.

Might renumber. I suppose the results print is not really needed.

That sounds like a good plan. Do you have the background without the flights and numbers on it? I could possibly draw them in and include the Zapata to Lubbock flight. In that case, they wouldn't have to be exact, but just close enough to show what a great flying region you're in.

Here's my latest attempt ...

I used Google Earth for this one. I added the cities by hand and then drew the arcs and text with a paint program.

The problem is that it's too tall to make a good banner logo. I should have tilted the tracks like I did with the other one to make the words fit better.

Regarding the wording, I just went with the "Go Far..." off the top of my head. We can have it say whatever you want, and maybe put the SWTHG part at the top so people see it first. I also noticed that I ran "Southwest" together as one word, and I'm not sure if the official club name is "Southwest" or "South West". I'll follow whatever you suggest Sam ... it's your club!! :)

P.S. As Bill discovered (and posted ... Thanks Bill!!), if you click on the image, it will expand to full height and eliminate the scroll bars. The scroll bars wouldn't be needed in the logo anyway, but that's a handy tip to expand and contract images within the forum (Thanks again Bill!!!).

OK, here's another one ...

One of the things I like about this one is the club name comes first (in the upper left). This can be important because some people might have smaller screens (or be zoomed in) and won't see the whole width of the image. So I wanted the club name to be visible even in that case.

Here's a scaled version that's been extended to the right (added more "earth") so it can take a wider screen. Really large screens will just see more of the black "outer space" to the right of the banner.

What do you think? Do I have your permission to try it out on your forum Sam?

Hi Bob,

Sure, try it out on the forum. I believe Southwest is correct. Can you change that in the forum name also.

   Thanks BobK
