Early Internet forums evolved a specific terminology:
Forum
Topic
Post
So a "forum" contains many topics, and a topic contains many posts. Just remember
Forum,
Topic,
Post.
As time went on, it was useful for forums to also contain subforums. Subforums are just forums inside other forums. We use a lot of subforums at the U.S. Hawks. This is an outline of our current Forum and Subforum hierarchy:
U.S. Hawks Hang Gliding Association
Hang Gliding General
Building the US Hawks
US Hawks Ratings
U.S. Hang Gliding Pilots
Hang Gliding Videos
Hang Gliding Politics
US Hawks Training Manual Project
Blog Forum
Technology Forum
Discussions from Other Forums
Accident Reports
US Hawks Chapters
Torrey Hawks Hang Gliding Club
Tooele Hawks Forum
Lakeview Hawks Forum
SW Texas Hang Gliders Forum
Mo Hawks Forum
Rio Grande Soaring Association
Austin Free Flight Association
Shasta Sky Sailors / Shasta Hawks
Friends of Dockweiler Gliding Society
SoCenNY Hang Glider Pilots
US Hawks History
Snippets of US Hawks History
Otto Site Marker
Hang Gliding Historical Committee
Off-Mission Discussions
Free Speech Zone / Off-Mission Discussions
Non-HG Blogs

So each of those is either a "forum" or a "subforum". Most contain topics, but some also have other subforums.
I hope that description helps.
