Wearable wings? The stage and costume world has offers that might tease designing a HG pack of the "wearable-pack" sort. In Google Images, search "wearable wings" for an adventure. But this topic thread probably shuns odd looks, open wings, but rather neatly packed HG parts. Nevertheless, in future super materials we might have some fast deployable wearable wings for hang gliding that are "at the ready" without piecemeal assembly ad yet with a pleasant safe appearance for riding in a city bus. Broad deployed worn wings adequate for hang gliding at reasonable airspeeds would not be welcomed on city buses. But very high airspeed hang gliders worn and at the immediate ready are already available, but one might not have noticed versions (self with just arms and hands provide a very high-speed hang gliding arrangement; look to the skydiving world for examples.) Then between bare arms and body as gliding wing set, advance to wingsuit gliding; wear the wingsuit on the bus; run super fast off the slope and glide; but ground smacking will probably hurt. From such minimal gliding wings from no wing to wingsuit, design larger wings that might be "worn" and immediately deployable. Then consider further designs of wings for hang gliding that are packable in the "wear-as-bulky-clothes" sort; then beyond have non-deployable smart packs for a wing that need assembly, but are so packed that one would still be in the "wearable"-no-further-pack tote realm. Then further, have exterior packs and some parts worn in clothing. Then further HG wings packed in two packs leased or one integral pack. Maybe aim to have in tote no parts that are non-wing parts.

Tactics to reach solutions of "<4-ft" HG packs or "<1-meter" HG packs?
Brainstorming invited for answers to the question.
Start:
:arrow: Look at an extant HG. Wonder how to alter the design to reach a solution.
:arrow: Feed the question to a robust artificial-intelligence (AI) program. First, build that AI program.
:arrow: Attract some genius mechanical engineers to the challenge.
:arrow: Run a national or international design contest. Have a substantial prize. Assemble a set of judges.
:arrow: Attract artists to the challenge.
:arrow: Form a national club dedicated to the challenge. E.g., the German 1-meter HG-Pack Club, the Swiss 1-meter HG-Pack Club, the Japan 1-meter HG-Pack Club, the Nigerian 1-meter HG Pack Club, etc. ... or shorter names with bylaws set to carve out solutions.
:arrow: Study all hang glider patents for clues to solutions. E.g., does the following patent hold some clues? By Morel Pierre Emile Francois
:arrow: Review all the literature for hikeable hang gliders. Sift the ideas and comments for clues to solutions.
:arrow: Iteratively build framed hang gliders forcing limited lengths using nestable beam forms and/or telescopic beam forms. Modify details until the packs solve the challenge. Wrap sail to keep pack volume down. Test and break from minimums; beef up until solutions are found. Use computer design programs as one might or might not to help simulate solutions.
:arrow: Study all available hang glider manuals and wonder about matters that may lead to solutions.
:arrow: Study birds, insects for clues to solutions.
:arrow: Study the compacting strategies used for space projects, backpacking, foldable products, ...

good on ya Joe

Next stop is packaging the 13.5 foot sail.

But let's not forget the "Little Hawk", and Bob could it ground skim with a small pilot?

Thank you Joe for your dedication to the sport.

:shifty: Craig, nice collection of videos, ideas, sentiments, and suggestions to add to the movement! Thanks!
=====
"dive stick"
============
Little Hawk was ground skimmed by 190-lb self for short distance in stiff wind on bunnnnny slope, but Bob did not build the wing for such purpose; the wing held up to my mistreatment. The Little Hawk in mod rework could be packed within movement targets, but as it is, the pack is longer than movement targets.
===========
Moyes Malibu: I like the wingtip sail-webbing tension strap seat of soft cushion that provides friction hold of the webbing and a small "give" to it.
===========
==========
Continuing:
Want a LE shaper that packs down well? Mylar sheet flat; coil it for pack. Unpack: small coil opens to long flat. Then with hook-n-loop on long edges, form long circular cylinder. Consider having such cylinder held by taut cables in a deep mod of pitch-twitchy Port-a-Wing. Then have in one deep mod a double-surface (DS) sailing deal; the taut cables might be two or three instead of the Whitney one cable. And the keel area root of the cables might be large triangled instead of meeting at a single point. For some experiments: consider soft cables. Note: the item could be a tapered conical wrap and still be short coilable; such would allow a tapered thickness of the LE of the HG; the root of the left wing and root of right wing LE cable set could root at a strutted triangle at the keel; such would allow the thickness of the LE to supported from thick at keel to taper diameter at wing tips.

Within the movement are subsets defined by various targets. One subset open for workers regards packs that are 4-ft or less in length and within a pack aspect ratio of L/W of 4 or less. Also, one subset open for workers is the "1-meter or less" for pack length. Two sub-packs form an option; even three sub-packs form options; a sub-pack might be the collection of pilot-worn items.

Logistical note: firmly check that all parts are toted; don't leave something of the wing at home. :srofl:

Rib-option note: Stow rib sections inside main-frame segments?

Sail concerns and options: In various experiments, be open to have sail segments rather than gross integral sail. And be watchful for ways to stow sail segments so that wrinkle does not result in fat stow volume. Consider flat wrap of sail segments to form tote bagging. Consider pilot wearing of some sail segments; back cushioning? Hat? In cold weather: thigh wraps, chest wraps?
=================================
Our most exciting HG packs that are politely and safely city-busable are still to come into view.

Some variation of this.
I can see it now, the future of trekking over hiking

Paragliders are hikers as in "hitch", carrying a laundry bag. You don't know who they are.

Hang Gliders are also trekkers which is a master trade of sorts, and you know Exactly who they are.

The idea for making Hang Gliders packable is on the move, you are cutting edge.
Could you zipper it?"
I remember the Aussies, what a fun loving bunch.

Save that quote.

Second uses in HG for Zimmer frames or walkers?
===========================
Will there be long walk distances involved in HG trek?
Consider parts of the HG for travois poles. Consider ablative plate or second use of wheels or Safe-Splat mini skids for the travois interface with streets and sidewalks and trails.
===========================
One key for "politely and safely busable" is to have a pack toting that avoids threatening the hitting of other people's head. Aim for "low" tote, smiles, confident carry, clean, neutral odors, fun coloring, ... :thumbup: :wave: Consider a combination of chest thin pack, lower-back pack (not high-held pack), and low hand-carry of pleasant tight sub-packs. Upon turning one's torso, one does not want to hit another person; such could be bad news. Whille on a bus, frontal packing might be safer with more control. Be personally pleasant and be open to apologize if a bit of space is wanted; politely ask for a little give. Once off the bus or train and into a walk, a reconfiguration of tote scheme may take place.

Thigh frontal packs? Frontal chest-abdomen packs? Chin packs? Arm packs? Top-of-shoe packs? Signs on packs: happy birthday, wedding, Sears, Walmart, Amazon Prime, ...? Maybe show raw beams (but cushion ends of such), so there is full disclosure of what is seen; such might up trust. "My hang glider!" sign might do well. Various solutions could be tested for public reactions and riding success; reports from experiments would be welcome from the short-pack HG community.

Modified travois, counterbalanced travois, skid or wheeled travois, ...
that is, a kind of hand truck or pull cart made with parts of the HG ...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cart
HG short packers when walking might configure HG parts into a counterbalance modified travois where pulling involves very little compressive weight on the pilot's legs. Have the configuration so that most of the weight of the pack(s) are on or rearward of the skids (or wheels) so that the pulled part of the travois is fully counterbalanced, perhaps even slightly lifting the pulling pilot. I see the scene as a kiting scene where the pulling pilot is the powered anchor of the kiting system; the travois poles (perhaps choosing the triangle format and maybe even the triangle control frame (TCF) of the HG); the skid or wheels and load form the towed "wing" of the system; the air and soil or path as the "wind" complex media of the "kite" system during the tote. Perhaps avoid pushing while staying with pulling to need less energy for the tote. Explore balance points for best results.

Joining Bob's response to Frank, etc. in another thread regarding chopping Alpha 210 for a packing to fit 5 ft or less in length:
https://ushawks.org/forum/viewtopic.php ... 29&#p24236
====================================================================
Chopping extant Alpha and forming couplers to fit the 5-ft or less pack length is a possible project. Some increase of weight would occur. Other packing challenges would occur. Detailing the challenges would be an interesting study.
