Scott and Frank,
I flagged my post and have to agree with you two. I strayed too far off the hang gliding topic.
However I do feel that insurance and hang gliding are like oil and water.

If so many people weren't ready to sue at the stub of a toe, liability insurance wouldn't be needed.

To make this HG related, Escape Country, a great HG park in its day, was being sued constantly. They always won these stupid lawsuits but it cost them dearly to defend them all.

I agree. As someone currently being sued by Robin Marien, I am disgusted at how our legal system has operated.

With regard to this topic, I've had some requests to move it to the off topic area since it's not directly related to hang gliding. I try to be "gentle" in moderation, and I don't like to disrupt the history of what people have said and where they've said it. If things get too far out of hand, that's when I'm inclined to take action.

Along those lines, we've been slowly working toward building up the US Hawks Board of Directors, and I'd like such moderation decisions go through that process. Someone can suggest it in the public section of the Board's forum, and then it can be discussed by the Board members and voted on. Right now the Board is in "Trial Board" status, so I am still able to over-rule anything (but I try not to - and haven't so far). I see a good Board as the future of our association, and I thank everyone who's been participating.

I'm not sure if I would consider this topic to be "off topic" for the "Hang Gliding General" forum or not, but it is becoming the focus of attention for how we make such decisions and what actions to take. Frank has initiated an request of the Board to deal with off topic posts, and I hope we can come up with a policy that's fair and wise.

For the record, Bill flagged his own post requesting that his post (and possibly the entire topic) be moved to the off topic area:

I have to agree with two other Hawk members. I too was distracted from things that are solidly based on the sport of hang gliding. Jade Helm might better have a place in a political thread or the off topic.
Please move this post to the off topic area if not the complete thread.
This post although on target with the connection between insurance and hang gliding not working will together failed to stay on topic.

Right now (until the Board decides otherwise), I'm inclined to keep this topic here and keep Bill's post with it. I'm making that decision because:

  • It's just one topic and it's not dominating the forum.
  • Bill's post is in context of the topic, and should stay with the topic (wherever it goes).
  • There are aspects of the topic that are tied (very loosely) to issues that affect hang gliding.

I welcome any thoughts on this specific decision, and I invite discussions on the general subject in the Building the US Hawks forum.
