2019-01-14 Joe Faust initiated the communication and asked for and received permission for occasional recreational hang gliding on a five acre plot of undeveloped land in Southern California near Aqua Dulce; the landowner was informed of his non-liability for his permitting (without inviting and without charging fees) recreational hang gliding to occur via state statutes. The landowner was presented with a rehearsal that he could stop such activity by simple say-so; such stopping would form a firm trespassing-after-denial situation. Thanks to the landowner for such permission. The site will not be publicized. The quality of the site for occasional HG has not yet been determined.

1968-12-15....water skiing with Bill Bennett, Sydney Australia, after spending the last 380 days in Vietnam. Water skiing with Bill and his family was most enjoyable, and
they treated me/us with so much respect, I will never forget that. They explained what they were doing with their new tow gliders. Bill said that the early
days of Tow Kiting were filled with "the most insane crashes into the most crazy places", with much added beer and plaster, afterwards.
He said that after they had somewhat mastered being towed, they started experimenting with ways that they could
un hook or let go, and glide down to a ski landing. His kite was rigged so he could fly it after release, but they said that it wanted to stall badly at first. He
said that they were going to go for the world altitude record next month, using two drag boats, and a heavy cable, that's IF they could get the release
point right. ...…………….. What a week that was.

Donnell Hewitt did that ! That's why I nominated him as HG Hero.

What a tragedy, he and his wife (who was driver most often) died in a car crash several months back.

Thanks Sam, ....Water skiing with Bill was a hoot. He would ski barefoot , and then on his back. Listening to him talk about being towed up and then releasing, and seeing the two "drag" boats, and cable, I knew that he would break the record.

That was the first time that I saw a tow kite glider, in 68', then in 1970 back home, I saw my second kite gliders at the cliffs, then in 71 , saw my third and fourth and .......Hang Gliders in Telluride. I never made it past the ground skimming truck driving wire man, but helping them launch off some pretty crazy mountain tops was one of the coolest things I've ever done.
What was the first time that you wanted to fly Sam?. and Did you build your glider?

My first glider was a Seagull III, in '74.

I remember at age 4 or 5 jumping off the rabbit hutch, maybe 6ft high. I hit the ground and turned my ankle. My Grandfather, Sam, heard me bellerin' and came to see what was the matter.

These crazy times we are experiencing nowdays have shown me at least one thing: Might as well be Hang Gliding !

What a wonderful story Sam ... except for the ankle part.

Seriously, I think the urge to fly is born into some of us. I remember dreams of being able to step into the air and float across a room. In those dreams, I had to arch my back and shape my chest in just the right ways to make it work. I can remember those dreams to this day.

Thanks for sharing that story Sam. It took me back ...

Maybe we need a topic for flying dreams!
