What was the wind speed that day?

Hi Bob,

The picture is misleading if you think I am doing a Superman action in holding up an aircraft with one hand. The glider is still flying but the novice is not correcting the nose up attitude. My input is minimal but enough to correct the pitch up and get him going again.

It was 40 years ago but I guess the wind speed was around 10-12 mph as I would not have had a novice flying it if it were more. If a replica gets built you can see for yourself how slowly it can fly.

Tony, how responsive was roll to weight shift?

The sails look pretty tight, not much billow change available? Or, is looks deceiving here?

What was the weight of the glider (sorry if I missed that somewhere)? It looks to be pretty light.

Hi Frank, There was some adverse yaw which delayed the roll a bit, as can be seen in this old film of it on youtube:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDUrX_o727Y . To compensate for this the design has been modified to provide more effective billow shift on both jib and main sails. The addition of battens will help keep the aerofoil in the correct shape as you can see the blow down of the mainsail leading edge occurring at times.

As for the weight, I think it was about 35-40lbs but easy enough to carry around. As with the Whitney it could be made to break down to a bus-able length but the joints would add a bit more weight.

It was not difficult to adjust the flight trajectory to land before or after the fence.
