HG memorabilia

Hello, my name is Lyle (Andy) Anderson...I am one of the early Birdmen of California. I learned (nobody taught me) to fly in the summer of love (1969). In a box pushed way back in the corner I found some HG memorabilia that is slowly getting lost due to time and neglect. I have about 20 issues of Low & Slow the very first hang gliding magazine. What I was wandering is, does anyone know of someone, or organization that preservers this kind of stuff. I would like to donate them to some place where people could see and enjoy them. I think they will shake their heads in amazement and disbelief at what we did (and what we flew) way back then. I also have about 10 min of 8mm film that has been transfered to DVD of flying at Torry Pines from back around 1979-1980 or so along with several min of flying at Shaw Butte in Phoenix AZ in the same space of time.

Old diver pilots never die...they just lose their flare

Hey Andy,

That's fantastic. I'd love to see that kind of stuff find a good home. I believe Joe Faust (USHGA #5 / US Hawks #5) has been keeping track of hang gliding history. In fact, he may have printed those low and slow magazines himself. :)

I hope to see Joe at the Torrey Hawks Second Sunday tomorrow and I'll mention it if I see him. And if not, maybe he'll chime in here.

Mostly, I'd advise you to hang onto them for now so we can be sure they find a good home. Let's see if Joe (or anyone else) has any good ideas.

It was great (and an honor) meeting you at Horse this week. Thanks for your membership in the Torrey Hawks and the US Hawks.

Bob K.

P.S. So what do you think of the Blythe Hawks?

Hello Andy -
Long Time No see - The first time i thnk ...I met you was the sail loft in Lomita where Dick Eipper worked. He scheduled 2 meetings there as I recall , under the (club) Peninsula Hang Gliding Club... (may be fuzzy on that)-
Most of the relics I once possessed , have long since gone- , we should also mention here that a complete early collection of Low & Slow can be had on "disc" , Joe Faust was good enough to alert me to this some time back . These archival properties would be very valuable , there may be a method of arranging a proper CENTRAL Hang Glider Historic COLLECTION of Artifacts, through all of us here at US Hawks & also other relative web sites. If such a place (person?) stepped forward to be the "point-man" for being the magnet of a clearing house project , within a short time contributions of actual relics would begin to come together-
In this area , Destin Florida , there wwas a grand effort called Aviation History Museum. It was run by Drina Welch Able , she was sister to "WACO" aircraft founder Orin Welch. A contemporary of Waldo Waterman , Orin Welch was lost going over the Hump (China to India) 1943 declared missing Pan American Ferry Command (pilot) -
Drina had ammassed a large real collection from across America, as old timers passed on, she inherited collections from family members. I spent countless hours there cataloging and sifting through , packages sent UPS to the museum. Those archives are once again located now in Indiana , I believe.
If someone has access to a Aviation museumperhaps a new wing could be extended to begin housing such Hang Glider eclectic memorobila .

Let me give it a try...

Here's a link to an image:
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_XA0SovsqiAs/TLeSL7qXqkI/AAAAAAAABhI/PkJDwFtlSm4/s576/w%20%28114%29.jpg

Now let me try to embed it...
[iref=http://lh6.ggpht.com/_XA0SovsqiAs/TLeSL7qXqkI/AAAAAAAABhI/PkJDwFtlSm4/s576/w%20%28114%29.jpg][/iref]

That still doesn't work. When I use the regular image tag I get:

It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image.

So I searched for that error and found a 9 page discussion on this problem at:

http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=552607

I can see that I have some reading to do!!! This is something that we should be able to do, so I'm going to look into it.

Thanks.

Andy, Are you responsible for this? It should pass for memorabilia either way

Glad to see you here on the Hawks Forum.
