US Hawks Hang Gliding Association

I've started this poll to announce and augment the new poll on the Crestline Soaring Society (CSS) forum which asks the question:

  Should USHPA Regional Directors' votes be individually recorded
      and easily available for USHPA members to review?

The CSS poll can be found at http://www.crestlinesoaring.org where you can log in to either vote or view the results. If you're not used to looking for polls on the Crestline forum (it took me a while to find it), you can look in the left-hand column below all the menu items and above the calendar. Here's a picture to help you find it:



Please note that the CSS poll is far more important than this one on US Hawks because the other Regional Director candidate (Dan DeWeese) will be using it to decide if he will also support open voting. If Dan is willing to make that commitment (and a similar commitment about supporting the Torrey Hawks) then I'll vote for him myself!!   

So if you're a member of the CSS forum, please go there and vote!!

I've seen the results on CSS. 100% Yes, with 15 votes thus far.

Since I'm not a CSS club member, I did not attempt to vote there, but as a CSS forum member it appears that it would be possible.
My comments there surely reflect my opinion.

Even though our Directors are elected regionally, the decisions they make on the Board affect all of us - everywhere. So I think all USHPA members have a stake in all elections - everywhere.

One of things that I really would like to see in the future is having more clubs use a single integrated forum like we have here on the US Hawks. That way people get a better idea of what's happening in other clubs and in other parts of the country. I think it helps build a better community ... especially since we often go fly at other sites.

There are way more positive comments also. Here is one of the best, after Ryan Voight suggested that those who support open voting should attend a meeting sometime and then would understand why it just can't be done, +\-

Look - people have been recording meeting results since the dawn of man. This isn't surgery, auto mechanics, or flight instruction - it's stuff any mid-level professional knows how to do, and has been doing their entire career.

I've been involved in plenty of nonprofit organizations, and had little old ladies doing this stuff. There are plenty of ways to do it - that don't include expensive devices. You're comment about meetings being fast-paced is even more reason for voting records - not less.

Are voting records more important that actual agenda items? Not a valid question. It's like asking if we should choose between conducting business with the lights turned on or off, or whether there should be oxygen in the room - it's part of conducting such business. If you're gonna do it, do it right.

That is a hot button line for me. The logic of "you eat breathe and sleep hang gliding, volunteer your time when you're not working in the sport, voluntarily spend time trying to help people advance by sharing on forums like this, you've worked to develop a new harness option for recreational pilots, you volunteer to help share/grow the sport at national trade shows, you give away your video footage (taken with thousands of dollars of equipment, paid for out of my own pocket) to news and television channels- just to show hang gliding in a positive light in the media... therefore you should put in a little more time and effort"

Here's a real simple voting idea for the USHPA. At the beginning of every Director's Meeting hand every voting member a "Voting Card". On that card are blank spaces to record the number of the vote subject/action item. Under the vote subject number there are two (or three?) boxes with "Yea" by one, "Nay" by the second, and (maybe) "Undecided" by the third.

Each Regional Director is responsible for writing their name at the top of the form and hearing and writing in the Vote Subject number - and then, for filling in one little box next to their choice - at the time the vote is called. Oh, and handing it in to the designated "Vote Collector" when all votes have been taken - or a new card is needed.

If an RD failed to fill out or turn in his/her Voting Card, then their (raised hand?) vote would not count.

A medium size card could have space for 20 - 30 "Vote Subjects". It would cost pennies to make up each one. Maybe $10-$15 for enough of them to cover the whole RD Meeting's proceeds.

I've heard that even the "US Professional Idiots Association" has a similar system in place - and it works!

What's USHPA's excuse?

This is just what I was thinking after reading Ryan, again, explaining how difficult it would be.
A blank line could be included for the Director to pencil simple description of the vote to help themselves keep track of what's going down at a high speed pace that ordinary mortals could never understand.

A good Director could even use this basic tally sheet to communicate to members what was done in their behalf.
But maybe I'm dreaming in La La Land today.

Unemployment is down, stock market is up, physics no longer applies and QE infinity will cure us all!

Ryan would do well to adopt some of his fathers humility ( and wisdom ).

Seems that Ryan has been nominated and elected, secret ballots of course, to assume the USHPA "attack dog" duties that Mark Forbes once fulfilled.

He is an exceptional pilot and I'm very impressed with his competition debut at SCF. He does a lot for the HG world, but like... he ...said,

Seems like there is pressure put on him, coming from somewhere. Just another reason why RD votes should be recorded so the Directors could serve the members and would be free of Executive Committee pressure.
