US Hawks Hang Gliding Association

Region 6 pilots: Kansas City

As Jim Gaar has personally acted to restrict access to several hang glide message boards I am now asking him to personally spread the word, (specifically on the Region 6 message boards), that a stationary winch tow system has been purchased for future use in the Kansas City area .

Pilots interested in using this system can use the *uncensored* USHawks.org hang gliding message board to discuss access and use of this system. http://ushawks.org/

At present, the winch system is located in central North Carolina and there is an issue of transporting it to the Kansas City area. The winch is built on a small two wheel trailer and can be easily towed by most vehicles.

If anyone may be traveling in that direction anytime soon and could possibly retrieve and transport this winch back to Kansas City, please speak up and we can discuss the logistics and the fee for the gas and effort.

Those wishing to benefit from this winch system in the future or to "pay forward" the future of hang gliding in general can also speak up now.

Those willing to chip in for the expense of getting the system back to Kansas City, will be greatly appreciated.

I don't have any plans to travel that route in the near future, but maybe someone else will chime in.

So, does this mean you're going to be starting the Kansas City Hawks? Just let me know when you're ready for your own sub-forum.

I like the "pay it forward" idea. In fact, that's one of my favorite movies ... except I didn't like that they killed the kid in the end. It sent the message that "no good deed goes unpunished". While this may be true, it's not a very inspiring message. I prefer movies where the good guy wins in the end ... and gets the girl!!

Good idea but at the present time I seem to be locked out of the two local discussion groups that I know of.
Jim Gaar seems to be all over the two main discussion groups that we are both censored on but as of yet I don't see him lifting a finger to get the word out to help getting the winch transported to Kansas City.

"Mo Hawks" seems a good name as I'm on the Missouri side but it might have to be "Mo Hawk" for now because so far I would be the only member!

A few days ago Jim Gaar mentioned 'paying it forward' in regard to moving USHPA headquarters. He wrote that he was willing to pony up time and money to that effort as this would "hinge" (?) the future of hang gliding..

Gosh, it sure would be nice if Jim Gaar could apply some of that magnanimous generousity locally, where it counts.
Kansas City is a tough place to be a hang glider pilot. Moving the corporate headquarters isn't going to help a thing here.

I've only asked you to forward this information because you, Jim Gaar, have personally been so active in censoring myself on message boards that I now can't access.

Start the process of redeeming yourself and please spread the word that should be very exciting news to the Kansas City pilots that you call "gang'. This will cost you nothing but if you are serious about paying it forward doing things that will advance the future of hang gliding then maybe you could pony up a few bucks to offset the cost of getting this rig home to Kansas City where it can be put to work furthering the future of hang gliding..

I don't think USHPA will let you be a Chapter of 1, but we don't have that restriction here at the US Hawks. Our motto is "build it and they will come ... eventually".

Just let me know when you're ready, and I'll be happy to be a member.

USHPA most definately won't allow *this* chapter of one because I'm not planning to renew membership anytime soon.
That could change by necessity if I get the urge to travel again to fly but that isn't likely at the present.
I hate driving these days and that's why I'm searching options to transport the tow rig to Kansas City.
Jim Gaar's resistance to lift a finger in assistance to that end is duly noted.. again..

The word will eventually leak out that there are new possibilities of flying near Kansas City.
There are a few original pilots here that I wouldn't mind flying with and there are evidently a small crop of newer pilots that have come along since I've been out of the picture. In any event, towing will occur and I will be the number one member of this exclusive club.

If the "Mo Hawks" becomes a viable entity I would be honored to have you, Bob Kuczewski. as a founding member!

OK, that sounds like a winner!!

I'll start a forum for the Mo Hawks Hang Gliding Club. The first order of business will be drafting the bylaws. We've been working through that with the Lakeview Hawks, so you can look there for some ideas. Once the bylaws are drafted, then people can look at them to see if it's a club they want to join. That's why I usually like a simple positive mission statement that people can remember and support. The mission statement should be the "glue" that binds the members together. Members may find themselves disagreeing with many different policies and decisions, but they should be able to stand shoulder to shoulder behind the mission statement.

So please take a look at the Lakeview Hawks bylaws topic (which contains the Torrey Hawks bylaws as well) and start deciding what you like and what you don't.

OK Warren, the "Mo Hawks" forum is up and running. Please be the first person to post there to test it out. If you have any trouble, please feel free to either send me a PM, call me on the phone (858-204-7499), or post here.

I'd suggest that your first topic should be a sort of welcome message to anyone who stops by or who might want to join. Remember that a forum needs a balance of topics to keep it going. Some can be politics (which tends to be what I focus on), but you'll have to force yourself to include other more "happy talk" topics. Sam's work on the winch is an example of good positive content, and the same is true for the Little Hawk topic. Public outreach is also a good "happy talk" topic. I know you're a very serious fellow with serious thoughts on your mind, but please try to balance that to make members feel welcomed in your forum. OK?

Also, I am currently the moderator on all club forums, but I will honor the wishes of club presidents (currently Joe for Torrey Hawks, Jerry for Tooele Hawks, Sara for Lakeview Hawks, Sam for SW Texas HG, and Warren for Mo Hawks) for their individual forums. I generally believe in cooperative moderation, and so I usually try to PM members if I see a problem. I generally ask them to either make any changes themselves or I ask permission to make changes for them - such as correcting spelling or suggesting a better location for their topic or post. The goal of the US Hawks forum is to allow everyone to express what they want to say in a way that's satisfactory to them ... and still have us all be able to work together. It's not always easy, and cooperation is greatly appreciated.
