According to my notes Canadian insurance works at all US ushpa flying sites. This needs to be verified, but is part of my plan to replace ushpa with a "Hang Glider Control" based ios website. Bob could get this insurance now and fly now.

On another note I am looking at implicating ushpa with Racketeering charges.

Canadian insurance is a good idea. But what about California's recreational use statute? Any landowner is immune from liability if no invitation is made and no money is charged. I believe donations would be fine. Money that currently goes to USHPA could instead go to Sylmar.

Aside from racketeering, USHPA is wide open for an anti-trust lawsuit (if they don't go "belly up" first).

USHPA squandered the recreational pilot insurance we all paid for with decades of dues.They squandered it to give a pass to their buddies and nothing has changed. Sylmar's donations to the RRG should have stayed ... at Sylmar.

So who makes the final call on accepting Canadian insurance, the USHPA or any other decisions
Who makes the call. Do you really think a competitor will be let in
What about the Recreational Act/Law/Statute , the City waver,. that's already in place to protect the City
Who protects the people, recreational pilots rights

Very interesting idea that led me to check out our northern neighbors.....a non-resident costs 40 bucks for rwo months. not sure if they hand out yearlies to non-residents, does anyone know the answer to this ?????

And Canadian INS work for USA sites....another good question, or do they have to buy non-resident to fly here?

But the biggest question I have that dhmartens stirred up in my brain with this thread....uh....the Canadian association is also a combination of hang gliding and paragliding......And I am sure they have the same average of accidents as every other country....
I am really curious now why they have not been dropped by insurance companies, who insures them, etc. etc....

why is it still working for them? Does anyone know? Very curious.

From the HPAC website:

Third-party liability insurance. The HPAC/ACVL insurance is good in Canada. It is useful to buy a national membership in the country you are visiting to get the proper coverage. Some countries will require that you do. In the US, most sites will require that you buy USHGA insurance. Check before you go.

I guess that answers one of my questions although that description still refers to USHPA as USHGA so possibly a very old description on their own website and perhaps does not reflect current coverage

I was directly overhead Bruce at Chelan Butte when his glider tumbled and he had to throw his chute...I top landed, hiked down to the crash site and helped him drag the wreckage up the hill, then he drove for me as I re-launched and flew my single surface out 20 miles....Bruce showed up two minutes after I landed with a six pack of cold Canadian Beer....a good day (pronounced Gue-day by Bruce )...RS

But my largest question is...WHY DOES A COMBINED HG/PG organization still working in Canada while we, here in the USA got dropped?
Are Canadians safer pilots than we are? Does Lloyds of London continue to cover them while they dropped us?....What the heck is really going on here?

Aside from the U.S. being the Mad King of tort law, Canada has:

Socialized medicine.
Socialized surgery.
Socialized recuperation.
Socialized search and rescue.
When the State pays the bills, it's easy to insure people.

When the State doesn't pay the bills, people are more cautious.
So are insurers.

Also look at the (concealed) USHPA claims for so-called third party liability insurance.
Your association defended ultralight tow operators from a lawsuit over noise.
Your association defended one paraglider against another for a midair collision.
(Good thing you hang glider pilots picked up half the tab.)
Once you start doing that stuff within a dangerous sports group, insurers won't touch you.
You'll have to form an RRG.

I agree with all of Rick's points, and I would add USHPA's broken and corrupt culture to the list.

Go to the HPAC web site and you will see a list of how each Board member voted on every issue. That's accountability. I proposed a similar measure at USHPA when I was Regional Director. I couldn't even get a second by any member of the USHPA board. The USHPA President wouldn't even allow the motion to be seconded and no one challenged that ruling. In sharp contrast, we publish all of the votes of our Board members here on the US Hawks - just like the HPAC.

The same is true for reporting of abuses. I reported dangerous training practices at Torrey when I was a USHPA Regional Director. It was swept under the carpet. A year later those same practices caused a serious injury and a significant (yet undisclosed) insurance settlement. The settlement was reached and USHPA's policy was dropped almost immediately. Did USHPA apologize for ignoring my warnings ... or did they expel me?

The culture at USHPA is badly broken. They operate like a gang of juvenile delinquents. Once any insurance organization sees that ... they're gone.

That's why USHPA had to stoke fear in pilots to get them to donate to USHPA's sinking ship - no one else would.
