I had no idea that Edgar Allen Poe was in the hoax business. The article is a sad reminder of the human propensity to just make stuff up.

On the flip side, there's a creativity that emerges from these hoaxes, and it's hard to know if the resulting benefits outweigh the misinformation itself. Was Otto ever inspired by paintings of winged angels?

Aside from those issues, it's always inspiring to see how long humans have dreamed of flight. Now we've achieved it, and only USHPA can take it away.

I'll be at Torrey for Second Sunday today ... flightless again.

If we hadn't had birds as an example, I wonder how long it would have taken mankind to decide to try to fly?

Interesting question Frank. There is a lot of "monkey see, monkey do" in our species. That's another good reason to appreciate our feathered friends.
