On April 1, 1972 (no kidding) with the help of several friends, Neal Frink piloted the first flight of his homemade hang glider, patterned after the Hang Loose glider from a Popular Mechanics article. The glider was built as a high school physics project out of douglas fir, bamboo, polyurethane plastic, bailing wire, cardboard, and glue at a cost of $32.56. Neal went on to pursue an exciting 30+ year career as an aerospace researcher at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.
