Here's an interesting paper on the topic. http://pages.swcp.com/~spsvs/resume/POD ... -01-15.pdf
And a more in-depth paper on dealing with back-scatter and background noise: http://www.eecs.umich.edu/radlab/html/NEWDISS/Park.pdf

The good thing about high tension wires is also the bad thing about high tension wires. They tend to be located along many of the best thermal triggers. Good/Bad news for an X/C pilot. :?

Sonic Technology ElectroSensor is a simple, accurate and affordable hand-held Gaussmeter, which measures Electro Magnetic Fields with the push of a button. You can quickly and accurately measure the level of EMFs emitted by all common electrical appliances and equipment, displayed on a LED light bar scale measuring from 1.5 to 30 milliGauss. The pick-up coil is located in the tip of the unit and can be rotated for increased directionality. The ElectroSensor is in demand by parents and others wishing to evaluate the safety of their homes and is also popular with Ghost Hunters and Paranormal Investigators who use the ElectroSensor to measure changes in electro magnetic fields.
