Bettina Gray awarded me the 1982 U.S. Gray Prize for "the best media representation of hang gliding" for my film of the 1981 cross country competitions in Owens Valley, Aoli, Comet Clones & Pod People.
I shared the 1983 Gray Prize with Steve Moyes. He won for his film of flying Mount Kilimajaro. Bettina kind of jumped the gun and awarded it also for my The Sky Blue Movie, my never-released film of the 1982 Owens Valley XC Classic, which I was in the process of editing. She had seen me shooting it and was no doubt expecting to see the movie soon. Unfortunately, I was financing the studio work with the proceeds from Aoli, Comet Clones & Pod People and when Wills Wing dealer Jim Shaw started touring with it and a great many others pirated it from their friends, the income dropped to nothing and I shelved the project. I returned to honing my personal XC flying skills, my experience with trying to promote hang gliding a total, heartbreaking financial bust.
