Flying possibilities Wed. 12/14/2016

Postby Bill Cummings » Wed Dec 14, 2016 7:01 am

RGSA/Hawks,
It has been staying more west for wind direction than was forecast so Matt's Mountain (Mag Rim) will be crossing from the right.
The Little Florida Mountain has a better direction but models were for lighter wind than is happening this morning.
Robin has volunteered to be my driver plus we need another coat of sealant on the ramp and the road needs some help. It may be blown out at the Little Florida launch already so of course we are going to go just on wish and duty. (What else is new :?: )
Maybe I can get some pictures of Robin working his butt off. I will be stuck with the unenviable boring job of documenting the work.

Robin,
It looks like (windytv) it is going to switch to ESE between 8 and 9 am tomorrow. Steve will sit this day out.

OK. I can agree with that. It looks pretty chancy for catching the north winds before they shift, so I guess we'll be better off waiting for the right day at Volcanic Peak.

Flying possibilities Tue Jan 03, 2017 @ Matt Mt.

Postby Bill Cummings » Mon Jan 02, 2017 8:43 pm

Robin scheduled an expedition to Matt's Mt. (Magdalena Rim) NW of Las Cruces, NM.
I'll do the driving and try to get some video and pictures. Ann is down from up north
and she usually puts up some good videos herself. Robin and Ann will swing by my place tomorrow at 10:00 am and I'll follow them to the LZ to drop off my vehicle at the bottom. We have had some rain lately so we may have to have Ann wade out and see if it's safe to cross the arroyo's.
Check later on the Magdalena Rim thread (Matt's Mountain) to see how things went. I better pack my life jacket and a flotation rig to throw to Ann in case she gets swept away. :srofl:

Flying possibilities, @ Volcanic Peak 1/6/2016

Postby Bill Cummings » Fri Jan 06, 2017 11:37 am

RGSA/Hawks,
Robin has agreed to drive for me today to Volcanic Peak which is south of exit 116 on I-10 (New Mexico). It faces NNE and the wind is supposed to swing around to that direction and slow down from blown out at 4 pm. If aviation takes place I'll put any video and pictures up on the, "Volcanic Peak," thread.

Flying possibilities for Monday MLK Day 16th.

Postby Bill Cummings » Fri Jan 13, 2017 1:09 pm

Robin and I put our heads together (ouch) and figured that the next best chance for mentoring would be Monday 16, 2017.
Today, 13th, the forecast is saying W to SW -- but as a forecast goes that's pretty far out to be relied on. They must think I'm more stupid than I look :?
Sunday we'll look at the forecast for Monday and figure out where to try out some wing running.

Flying possibilities, Volcanic Pk. Fri, Sat, Sun.

For those willing to brave near freezing temperatures the long range forecast for early Friday 27, Saturday 28, and Sunday 29th are indicating soarable at Volcanic Peak.
I'll drive.
Years ago 20º (F) was my lower limit for towing on frozen lakes so I know 31º to 39º on those mornings listed above will be survivable.
Any takers? It should be easy to break my duration record at VP.

Yeah, but it's a dry cold...

Let's try to assemble at my house about 11:00 am on Saturday the 28th, so that we can guide everyone up to the site. Multiple flights just might be the rule of the day, up there.

Robin has scheduled a trip to Volcanic Peak for tomorrow Friday January 27, 2017 in addition to Saturday's trip.
Mike E. will be coming to my house tomorrow at 10:30 am and we will next go to Robin's house at 11:00 am.
We should arrive at Volcanic Peak shortly after Noon. The forecast is indicating that it will be NNE and soarable Friday.
